I don't even own a 7mmRM but know a few people who do. Im wondering if anyone has actual velocity data to justify the extra dose of powder it uses? I don't see it being more effective on game at distance than a plain .30-06.

What are everyones thoughts on the 7mm? Personaly I think its lame as far as magnums go.

mine kills moose fast... from far away even... and mnt sheep... ect... but so does my brothers 30-06..... it's like comparing apples to apples.

I have both a 7mm Rem Mag and a 300 Win Mag...if you wanna PO a 300 Win lover, tell him that a 175 out of the 7Mag at 2950 will out trajectory and out energy a 180 out of the 300 Winny at 3000 past 350 yards...or thereabouts....SuperCub says it well..........pull up a chair and crack a cool one...this should be good....

someone who has a ballisitics program can give us the numbers..I went thru this excercise a while back, can't remember the exact numbers but a 175 gr .284 with the same nose and heel profile as a 180 gr .308 will have a higher BC of course and the velocities are not that much different.

But,..will the average guy notice the difference in the field?...not me.

my son has a .300 win.mag., I got the 7mm ultra mag. they both dump moose in a hurry, but i think from our test firing that the 7mm is a flatter shooter. nice pic supercub. i think you'll find a 7mm at 200 yds. really out performs the .30-06. he uses 180 rem. corlokt and i use 160 rem. nosler partition. but you really can't compare the .30-06 to a 7mm or a 300 win at longer ranges.IMHO

The 7MM Mag has a persistent reputation for failing to achieve the velocities given in manuals. I've never tried it myself, so I can't speak from experience, but have read it enough times and talked to folk that have tried it to wonder.

Speer manual #12 alludes to this, sort of......

"There is quite a variation in published loading data for this caliber. Differences in cases, primers, and bullets all have an effect"

"Seldom will either handloads or factory ammunition match nominal factory ballistics in a sporting rifle and there is a great deal of velocity variation among sporters in this caliber."

.

All magnums are over rated. There's no game in North America that requires one. Big bears included. The marketing types(aided and abetted by the gun rag writers) are very good at telling you what you must have.

A shooting friend of mine gets 2950 with a 175 out of his Ruger #1 7 Rem Mag.

I had a 24" 700 in 7 Mag a while back that would do 3350 with a 139 Hornady.

The loading manuals are very conservative in thier 7 Rem Mag loads.

A 30-06 will not launch a high BC bullet @ 3000+ fps, that is where the 7mm Rem Mag excels

under most hunting conditions, it has no advantage

both are excellent cartridges, the 7mm is often underloaded as noted. My last 7mm was a 26" 700 Sendero SF which would do a 140 TSX @ 3200 fps over a 72 grains of H1000, it was not a hot load

At 400 yards there is so little difference between the 7mm Mag & the 30-06 that no animal in the world will be able to tell the difference.

If laser like trajectory and retained energy were the only criteria in a hunting rifle we would all be packing braked .50 BMG chambered rifles.

................Bull####. I can hold on hair out to 450 yards with my .257 Weatherby Mag. Nothing over rated there in my books. What i do find over rated is the 7mm Rem mag actually. Lots of powder for not much gain over a .30-06. Chrony a 165 grain 06 light hornady mag round out of a Ruger no 1 with a 24" Hart barrel sometime and you will throw your 7 mm in the next river.:D

7RM sometiems experiences erratic pressure spikes, the reason so much of the ammo and data is soft for it.

It's a good cartridge, no better or worse than many others. It shoots a little flatter than a 30-06, which may or may not be important to you. Neither one offers any measurably better "knock down" or "killing power" than the other..

I say to shoot what you like.

Everything under the 338 is moot. The british reffered to anything of 30 cal and under as 'miniatures'! Mine you, they also looked on the 375 and the 450/400 as a 'medium' bore!:D

A better comparison is 7mm Rem Mag versus 270 Win--then you're looking at bullets and velocities with more in common.

I've got a 140 grain TSX doing 3150 with safe, published loads (and just 60 grains of powder) in my 24" 270. I honestly don't know why I'd ever need ANY other cartridge, and the 7 RM looks especially silly in comparison.

Luckily, there's no legal requirement to only buy/own/shoot cartridges we NEED...
