I picked up a Sako 75 NIB chambered in 7mm Rem Mag. It was one of the ones that Sako recalled and changed out the barrel on. Now I know that the Rem mag is a capable round and will do whatever you can expect from it. It is accurate, not horribly hard on the shoulder and loaded ammo is availible anywhere.

Now, I know it is a great rifle as it is, but I've also got a love for rifles that don't need to go that fast yet still do.

I've already got a STW and 30-378, so the question is: leave it as a Rem mag, rechamber to 7mm RUM or STW OR try to talk my wife into letting me get a 338 Edge barrel for it??

As it stands, the rifle is unfired, so now is the time to decide if I want to rechamber that barrel before I start breaking it in.

timmy204 makes a good point. I voted for .338 Edge because, if I read your OP correctly, you already have 7mm and .30 cal boomers. Why not make it a hat trick and get .338 Edge? At least you can take advantage of that big case by using big bullets.

Wild Thing, that is the most logical path. It also leaves me with a factory barrel to put back on the rifle and return it to it's factory configuration in the event I don't like the changes.

Considering your other cartridges that you already have I'd also go with the 338 Edge but will it fit into a Sako mag?

you've already got a 7 and a 30, i'd go to the edge.
if it fit's like camp cook say's.

It fits, I can load the clip up with live 300 RUM rounds. It's the same action that Sako used to build their 375 H&H. I'm going to shoot it in the 7mm Rem configuration and see how it shoots, obviously a custom barrel will shoot a little better, but we'll see.

Heck, at the least I'll get to play with a different Sako for $500 or have a great rifle the way it is.

keep it as is 7 RM so many bucks to swap barrel and get the reloading stuff for the new caliber. keep mney to get another rifle later on.

neither. buy a .50 BMG.

You know what the 7mm mag (any 7mm mag) has in common with the 338Edge?
NOTHING!

Kind of new guy question
Honestly dude, the 338Edge is not for new guys...It will just make you sad....

Sad from your magnum eyebrow scar.
Sad from the game you missed (because you flinched).
Sad because it is so expensive to shoot.
Sad because you would rather be shot by a 7mag, than shoot the Edge again.
Sad because it wont fit in your Sako.

Though it looks impressive on paper it will never get you more game.

I have 2 of them.
Send me a pm, come to Victoria, and try mine.
Is more gun than you think.

X-fan, my 75 has a full length action that will accomadate a loaded round with a OAL up to 3.7" or so.
I realize the poll sounds like a kid that cruised the LRH forum for a day and then wanted an Edge, but I've got a couple overbore mags already. I just didn't want to go thro the 30-378 experiance again and pay $5 a case for brass, hence an Edge & cheap remington brass.

An Edge would fit a Sako just fine IMO

Not sure why people think an Edge won't fit a Sako action?
My 338 Gaillard based on a 8mm case on a AIII feeds flawless.
My buddies 300 RUM built on an AV works just fine too & it has a larger diameter at the shoulder than my 338 Gaillard wildcat & it feeds too.
An Edge would have a larger diameter at the shoulder than a RUM due to the improved case design after FF, but with a little work on the feeding rail, I am sure it would feed fine too.
A L61R/AIII/AV are 3.600 actions, a Sako 75 V or TRG-S is longer yet, so I am not sure what the problem is?

The only thing I don't like is you either need a short throat to seat bullets just off the lands & still fit the internal mag. Here is a photo of a couple bullets that do fit the mag & a 250gr HPBT that does not, but is 10 thousandths off the lands.

The 225 TSX is 10 thousands off, the 200gr Nosler BT is 20 thousandths & not sure exactly where the FF round is?
The 250gr HPBT will still shoot fine seated back to fit the box too.
