Anyone on here have a rifle chambered in 7 RUM? Chamber cut by a gunsmith to spec other than SAAMI? The freebore dimension is .400". I'm going to have one chambered soon and wondering if it's safe to have it throated short for the Berger 7mm 195gr or should I stick with the long freebore.

Feeding from the Wyatt extended mag box would nice but not the be all end all. I'm more interested in seating the Berger 7mm 195gr with the bearing surface in the neck with the boat tail at the shoulder junction. Then not far away from the lands.

Reading up on the 7 RUM, it's the first time I've come across multiple warnings to keep the Remington freebore.

Good article... it reinforces how stupid it is to chamber for very large capacity case in a barrel less than 28 inches...

Dont know if it will help you but I have chambered my 300 WM and 338LM to seat @ 0,050 from riflings and they shoot great

Thank you.

Ended up throating short. I had the rifle throated specifically for the Berger 7mm 195gr EOL.
Seated at the bearing surface/shoulder it's right at the lands. 3.950"

All Ultramag's?

I've been shooting a .300 RUM throated short with Retumbo for years safely. The .400" freebore Remington had me a bit concerned.

Haven't fired the 7 yet. I'll be trying RL33 first.

I thought yours was a 7mm rum....my mistake...

After having one short throated I had my 7mm rum rethroated to be safe....

I have owned two 300RUM rifles, one 7mmRUM rifle, and six 7mmstw rifles, and none were built with any extra freebore. The longest throat on any of those rifles resulted in seating the bullet about .080" off of the lands, and I had no issues of any kind.

That's what I was hoping to read stubblejumper.

What was the freebore in your 7mm rum?
