Can you handload a 7mm Rem Mag down to 7mm-08 velocities and still retain good accuracy. Looking to buy a rifle for my son and would prefer to start him off with 7mm-08 like recoil but leave the option to grow into 7mm rem mag.

I dont know why a 7-08 wouldnt work for years down the road......load it and have him begin on it, and I'm sure he could do it all with that rifle for quite a few years down the road....

You may just want to stick to the factory low recoil stuff till he's old/big enough to go full house. A friend of mine bought some Remington LR .270 win,115gr at 2800fps IIRC.

I bought my daughter a Stevens 200 in 7mm-08. She shoots 139 gr. Hornady Interlock. She's vry comfortable with the recoil and quite deadly with it. The reason I mention this is that the rifle is only $320.00 and is a tack driver. At that price, when he's ready for the 7mm Mag, it's still his choice to upgrade and the gun hasn't cost all that much. He'll probably keep it though.

Justasec here - how accurate does it need to be, anyway? If 2" is fine, then I'm sure it's do-able. H4895 is the usual reduced-load medicine.

Also - in a lot of cases, the 7mm Mag isn't putting anywhere near the advertised MV out in the first place. Depending on your rifle, it may not be that huge of a gap between 7 mag and 7-08 MV's in the first place and therefore shouldn't be hard to load down a bit

Id use some Varget or RL15 and load a 140 gr bullet to about 2700-2800 fps

someday down the road he can load 175 gr @ 2900 fps over a ####load of Retumbo, if he so desires

or you could just buy him a 7-08 and he could use that for a long time :)
