7mm STW ???

my dentist uses this chambering in a custom built Rem 700 rifle for hunting. He can cloverleaf it on the target. I'm sure it would have too much recoil for me to tolerate.

Ah, the good old days. Paid 670.00$ in '96 for BNIB Sako in 7mm STW. Seen the 700's roll from 759$ to 5000+ for custom rigs on gunbroker.
Recoil surprisingly very manageable and flat shooting. Brought down my first moose with this calibre.

In the early 80's most just bought a 700 and had it re-chambered with no other alterations required.Harold

... and you get the best performance with a 28 inch barrel... I wouldn't consider anything less than 26 inches...

Good ! Thabks for the info !

A bit more about the gun, it's a wood stock metal and wood 95% shot 100 rounds.

Any idea of the value ? Is the caliber a disaventage considering that hard to find caliber ?

I don't think it has any collector value. If it has a short barrel it's worth less than a 7mm Rem Mag. The action and stock have the same value as any 700 standard magnum BDL action and stock. The action $500, the stock $150 if they haven't been buggered with.

i would like to find a nice factory rem 700 7stw. would look good beside my 8 mag. look as i may i'm never find one unless its already sold.

Have both a Sako and a R700 in the 7STW. Incredibly flat shooting when handloaded a little hot. Recoil can be managed by fitting a little heavier stock. I find it less than a light 7 Rem Mag and more than a standard weight .300WM. Paid around $800 for the R700 and the Sako was a gift, Have seen a similiar factory stocked Sako go for around $1300 on here.

Only thing with the round is HSM & Nosler Custom Competition are the only two factory ammo offerings. Brass for handloading is basically down to 8mm Remington brass and Nosler Brass. Both at around $70 for 25.

If you get the chance to shoot one beyond 600m you will be impressed trust me.

Just my two cents.

I have owned six 7mm STW rifles since 1990, and it is still my go to big game cartridge. I have never had a problem finding Remington 7mmstw brass when I needed it, and I have never paid $70 for 50 rounds, let alone for 25 rounds. I find recoil no worse than a 300win mag in a rifle of equal weight.

I was considering doing one again for longrange hunting. I couldn't find brass anywhere unless you wanted to buy Nosler( I think it was) at an absolutely ridiculous price. So I would really caution anyone thinking of this cartridge( unless things have changed of course) to find the brass first.....

Same here, no problem at all to find Remington brass and prices for said brass were pretty much inline with any other belted magnum. Recoil is a non-issue and I've got to say I see very good velocities out of my 24 in barrel. I would say that speed difference will be more a factor of the barrel itself than whether it's + or - a couple inches.

300 weatherby , 8m rem mag , 375 hh and a few others are easily reformed into 7mm stw .

Agreed.

I had both a 24" stainless sporter and a 26" stainless Sendero in 7STW at the same time. They were about 100-150 fps faster than a 24" 7 Rem Mag with a 140.

I don't think they are a waste in a 24" barrel. Of course 26" will give a bit more velocity but then so will a 30" barrel, and a 36" will be even faster. Where do you stop?...:)
