Looking to purchase a sako 7mm stw. Does anybody shoot this calibre and if so do you have any info on it that may help influence or turn me away. I am looking to use this for moose hunting. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I have own three 7mmstw rifles, all built on 700 actions.I killed bighorn, pronghorn, deer, elk and moose with those rifles, and the 7mmstw has become my favorite hunting cartridge. The 140gr TTSX at 3500fps,makes a great combination for pronghorn to moose.

Great hunting cartridge. This would probably be better off in the hunting and sporting section because the 7 STW isn't much of a target round. Not to say it isn't capable of fine accuracy, but it is a barrel burner. A great cartridge for your 10 rounds a year hunting gun though.

On that note what sort of barrel life are you guys getting out of this cartidge?

I've never owned a STW, but I have loaded for two different buddies STW rifles.
One was a 25 inch Sako and the other was a 26" custom barrel.
Not saying it can't be done, but I couldn't get near 3500fps?
Do you run a bit longer barrel or something?

Both rifles shoot like a hot dam BTW. ;)

All three rifles have 26" barrels.

I also experienced those speeds with a 26" 7mm STW

139 gr. hornady pushed by around 80grains of RL-22

140 gr TSX would be just about perfect for those speeds.

I have owned a number of 7mm STW rifles over the years. Very fine hunting chambering that shoots flat and retains 2000 ft/lbs of energy right out to 500 yards. With the 160 at 3300, or the 140 at 3500, it's amazing how easy it is to hit at 500 yards. Interestingly, all the STW rifles I have owned have been very accurate, with many groups well under 1 moa right out to as far as one would want to take a shot at game. Expect throat erosion to take it's toll, though. Regards, Eagleye.

since its a hanloaders gun anwyas might as well go 7RUM , takes more powder. i was gonna ream my ruger no.1 to stw or RUM but i want it to last 50 years, and i shoot a fair bit. i think they the same bolt face too.

7 STW? I once loved her.. I can say buy it! When I owned mine, X bullets only existed,And 8 mag brass had to be formed. A 140 gr X at 3450 fps killed like a KENWORTH! Yotes to Goats, Moose, Elk, Bears. FLAT shooting, acceptable recoil, I would use that round for all " Except the one which leaves enormous tracks tipped with claws"
I fired 650 Rounds and the thing continued to slip them into a .650" 3group:D

Id like to own a 7STW someday, just cuz it looks so cool. Like my 8mm Mag, the cartridges look wild. Good enough reason to buy one. They make new barrels every day!

Has a Sako 75 in 7mm STW. It was the first rifle I ever bought. Ridiculously fast & accurate. Like a fool I sold it. Though a good old 7mm is now my mainstay ;)
