7mm WSM? Why is it not popular??

The 7mm WSM never took off in popularity because the American & Canadian hunters where always reading Sports Afield magazine 1950 to 80s and famous writer Jack O Connor who hunted all north America and other places used the 270 win exclusivly for all game. as Jack even said the .280rem was a better cartridge than the .270

The 7mm Remington Magnum sits firmly entrenched at the top of the 7mm Magnum heap.

It is unlikely that a "Johnny-come-lately" with similar ballistics will unseat it.

I have a 7mm RSAUM, and it is even more obsolete, despite being a fine performer.

Better lay in some brass for the 7mm WSM, as it is different than the 270 & 300 WSM.

Hi Everyone

I was just wondering why the 7mm WSM never took off in popularity like the 270 or 300 WSM? Does anyone have an answer for this?

Thanks!

The case neck is too short. I made a 7mm/270WSM wildcat to gain some neck length... much to the shegrin of Winchester lawyers and bean counters

I believe that dialoge among hunters was directed more toward the 270 and 300 WSM, and less about the 7mm WSM. Hunters are influenced just through simple communication by relatives, friends, magazines, etc. Popularity is the word.

Being a 308 man, the 7mm was never my choice, why should a WSM be more attractive, even the 270 and the 300 wm were never replaced by the WSM, big hype for marketing, if you ask... JP.

The rifle companies didn't want to sell just 1 gun that will do the job for any game on N.A.
Rather they push a .300wsm for larger game and .270wsm and .308win for the smaller game selling 2 guns instead of just 1.
With the bullet selection nowadays in the .284's over a magnum load it's the best go to cal around.

WSM popularity:
  • 270 WSM market success: Huge pent up demand for a new 270 cartridge since the introduction of 270 Win in 1925!
  • 7 WSM market failure: Too many excellent established 7mm cartridges (7mm-08, 280 Rem, 7 Rem Mag, 7 STW).
  • 300 WSM market success: Americans simply love 30 caliber cartridges.
  • 325 WSM market failure: Americans don't care for 8mm cartridges (8 Rem Mag).

That being said, 7 WSM is a better cartridge than 270 WSM because of 1-9" barrel twist compared to 1-10" barrel twist and 325 WSM is mini 338 Win Mag but it's DOA (dead on arrival).

There's nothing stopping anyone from getting a faster twist 270 Barrel ?

Even at 10" twist....I bet you could still shoot those 165's way out there without too much wind drift.

More of a marketing thing...and if you're at the gunstore there seems to be guns in 270wsm...dont' see anything much 7wsm. A lot of guys will just pick up something from the shelf.

And I thought I had the only 7mmRSAUM around !!
You are correct, they are an amazingly good performer... :)

To be honest, no-one knows.

Where do you get your data? Are the 270 WSM and 300 WSM really "more popular" than the 7mm WSM? It could be incorrect, or just an impression.

The market is saturated with dozens of chamberings between 223 and 375 that overlap each other probably 80% in capability, even moreso in the 264 to 323 range.

It mostly comes down to wanting to be different, or wanting something new.

From a gun nuts point of view, the 7WSM is THE cream of the WSM crop. From the general hunting point of view, the 270 is because its a "vast improvement in speed" over a .270 WCF. The .300 WSM is very popular...because, well its a .308 cal. The .325 WSM is pointless, but people still buy it because its new and shiny.

7 wsm

The reason the 7 WSM and the 7 SAUM have not done well???? The firearms companies are building rifles that will sell in the USofA. The American shooters have never embraced the METRIC CALIBERS. It's only we-us north of the border that understand all the advantages of meterics.

Lots of great points in this thread. I have a 7wsm and love it, recently a freind bought the same calibre after doing some research and seeing the merits of this fine calibre.

The 7mm Remington Magnum is one of the most popular North American calibres ever produced, so the point that North Americans won't embrace METRIC calibres simply isn't true.
Having said that, not many of the 7mm variants really blow the 7mmRM out of the water in terms of performance. The market is also saturated with 7mm's as well, 41 different 7mm calibres that I know of! Yikes!

BTW when I speak of the 7wsm, I include the 7/300wsm, 7RSAUM... because they are so similar with only the smallest differences.
