Hey, just picked up a 7mm Rem Mag. Remington 700 SPS DM. Anyone use this calibre for precision/long range shooting? Why or why not? It supposedly shoots very flat and accurately. (Haven't sighted it in yet).

There are some excellent 7mm/.284 match bullets and the round is indeed capable of outstanding long range accuracy in the right gun. Magnums are not generally allowed in competition however, and a non-braked 7RM has a fair whollop for shooting long strings. If you check on the 6mmbr dot com website, you will see many excellent 7mm rigs.

"...not generally allowed in competition..." Yep. However, there are matches that are shot with them. DCRA 'F' class is one. No muzzle breaks are allowed though. They send the muzzle blast and noise to the sides and will disturb the shooter next to you. The rifles aren't usually stock factory rifles either. They tend to be considerably heavier. Helps tame the recoil.

162gr Amax, Re25 (my prefered choice) or Retumbo or H1000, Fed 215M, Lee collet neck sized fireformed brass (Rem or win). Have fun.
Just keep an eye on barrel heat so you don't loose accuracy due to barrel warping. Have the action bedded properly. Free float the barrel with lots of room around the stock. Put a muzzle brake on - I like the Micaluk AR15 variety. Just open up the exit port and they work superbly for little money. Brake should cost around $65 and $50 for install.
The smallest groups shot recently at the 1000m fun shoot in Osoyoos were with 7RM Tikkas. 3rds a bit over 3" and 4" by two shooters on different days. 180gr Bergers were used but not sure of the powder.
My smallest group was with a Kreiger barreled Stevens and 162gr Amax using Re 25 as above. 2 9/16" 3 rds. Yes, I would say it has potential as a cartridge. Not sure what your rifle might do but would expect around MOA/sub MOA.
If you ever want to build a real tack driver, contact Guntech. His 7RM reamer is the best I have seen and keeps growth around the belt to a min.
