7mm08 and hodgdon 60 rule

its grate any caliber whit h4895 loads , 60% of the max loads, and me I put a pieces of cotton on top of the powder before seiting the bullet to keep the powder close to the primer have fun
 
Don’t need anything on the powder it will ignite just fine. Haven’t used it in 7mm-08 but have in other calibers. Works good. If you want really light stuff trail boss or other pistol powders work great

Yes, it is a very lightweight load. I have used it in various rifles when fireforming brass and for my sons to shoot when they were much younger. Strictly as a gunpowder, cheap it isn't. By weight, it is pretty much the same price as the rest. Yes you get the same size of container, but the 'kernels', aka donuts, gears, wagon wheels, are large and lightweight, so the container that held a pound of 4895 only holds 9 oz of Trailboss. Once you fill a cartridge case to the proper level, you use a similar but only slightly lesser $ value of powder as you would have a full charge of 4895 or Varget, etc. So, I'll give you that it is a great light load, it isn't going to save you a lot of money on powder cost. The one major item it does allow is the use of more cast bullets since the velocities are so much lower, which can save you a good amount of spare change. I prefer using H4895 these days instead. If necessary for a light load, set it down to the 60% of max as described by the Hodgdon procedure and work up from there. I usually find something that works accurately around 70 to 75 percent of max, but on a few rifles it has been a bit lower or higher. I have settled on H4895 for my full power go-to powder in my .223, but in a pinch I can also use it in my 30-30, .308, 300WM, 45-70, etc. It is not the 'perfect' powder for any of the latter but it can and does work well if required.
 
I run 36.2 grains of varget and can even go lower, half a grain at a time until the cases smoke from improper seal, this is with a 40 grain bullet, I tuned this load to under MOA with bullet seating for the reduced distance high power silhouette course, very moderate recoil and far more accurate then I could get the H4895 loads

How short is a 7mm 40gr bullet
 
36grs H4895 under a 120gr Nosler BT did 2550 fps from a 20" 7-08. Knocked over a couple mulies and a moose no problem
