A 7-08 is a decent cartridge, but if recoil reduction is the point of the exercise, a 6.5X55 in a heavy-ish rifle might be a better option. Loaded with a 140 gr bullet at 2600 fps, it would be a capable and pleasant rifle to hunt with. Another option is to spend the cash on some loading gear rather than a new rifle, and work up a reduced handload for the .30/06. When novice shooters want to try their hand with a centerfire, I'll break out some 130 gr bullets. A 130 gr TSX/TTSX, loaded at 2600 fps, would prove deadly on the game you intend to hunt, and are as pleasant to shoot as the 6.5.
