7mmPRC - Fav Hunting Ammo

I've got a Savage 110 in 7PRC and it is a bit of a dud, and very picky about ammo.

So far, the least worst in it has been Remington Premium Long Range with the Speer Impact. 2850 @ 1.5 moa

Hornady Precision Hunter 2850 @ 1.75 moa
Hornady Match 2 moa
Hornady Outfitter 5 moa
Federal ELD-X load: 2980 @ 2 moa


Given my situation, I don't think my info is of any actual use to anyone but you asked. LOL!

I'd be interested to hear what people are getting from the Barnes offerings.

I am assuming you don't reload. Should be able to tighten those groups up enough to make a good hunting load. With the crazy size of group the copper bullets are shooting, I would say the rifle needs a heck of a good cleaning. Maybe strip it down to bare steel, then start again.

I started reloading a couple years ago, but I wanted one rifle that I could simply feed factory ammo and not worry about it. I thought 7PRC would give me a good chance of that, and that is why I chose it over 280AI. The rifle was taken down to bare steel before taking it to two different gun smiths who found nothing wrong with it. It did shoot CX slightly better after that (pulled and re-seated to 0.040" jump actually grouped well but had pressure), nothing to make me pursue it. I suspect that it may not like secant ogive. I've sidelined it for a bit while I concentrate on other things. Eventually, I will try some more traditional bullet shapes that I can get reliably. I'm thinking TTSX, TGK, Classic Hunter, Accubond, etc and avoiding CX, ELD-X, LRX, ABLR, etc. But for now I've moved that scope to a known good rifle and see what happens there.

Besides, we're hijacking the thread.



Who has shot the Barnes VOR-TX 170 TTSX or Harvest 180TGK? How'd they do?

Let me guess, you chose the 7mmPRC for long range accuracy?
 
Quite often shooting any of the colid copper, or monolithic bullets after shooting more traditional lead bullets, you just can't get the accuracy. If you plan on sticking with the lead free bullets, lots of times it is good to do so after cleaning the rifle to bare steel, or very close. Then stick with the lead free. Some rifles don't care, but some are quite picky.

I know lots of people have has issues with the accu ind long range bullets being accurate, but I have found them to be very accurate in everything I shoot them in. All handloads though.

I have no experience with any of those 7PRC factory rounds. But out of the box hornady hasn't always been the best for me, neither has Winchester. But even the cheap Federals seem to shoot. I have been impressed with off the shelf nosler ballistic tip loaded ammo in a few cartridges, shot by other people I know, have seen, and shot out of their rifles myself.

If you can't find any loaded ammo that is working for you, you might just have to develop a dedicated hunting round for it. I know it's new or super high ballistic coefficient, but a tried and true 175 grain partition out of that 7PRC will be lights out for anything it touches.
 
I'm relatively new to the 7PRC and my chosen rifle to shoot it, I also don't handload right now, so I know my groups can get better. They are certainly not as good as my average 6.5 Creed groups right now, which are easy sub MOA all day with factory ELD-M's.
So, 1.4 MOA at 100 is mostly on me as the shooter getting used to a lightweight rifle (9lbs with VX5HD and Atlas bipod) and getting used to 7PRC as a cartridge. I know that I pulled two of those shots for sure and I think it's also partially related to it having a virgin barrel with no fouling.

That said, the first photo is my group from Monday with the factory Barnes 160gr LRX doing 2735 fps average, out of a 22" Seekins Element M3. I will spend a lot more time on the gun and tighten that group before bear season gets going here and I will post how it does then for an update.
Before I tested the Barnes, I also shot Precision Hunter 175gr ELD-X doing 2650 fps average but the Barnes grouped slightly better, while being a bit faster (could be speeding up due to firecracking, since I shot Barnes after the ELD-X.)
Overall, need more trigger time on it but I am happy with it so far and plan to hunt with the Barnes LRX this year.

I do plan to handload this cartridge in time for sure. Thanks for the tip. Still learning this one, Jim.

I'm also using a shorter barrel than you are and as I said, it was a brand new barrel that day. It's only had 1 full box through it, half Hornady half Barnes. It will speed up and group better, I'm sure of it. That was also my very first shots with both rifle and cartridge. 7PRC usually does 2850 to 2950 from a 22" barrel with factory ammo so although it does need to come up, I don't think it's going to go over 3k out of my gun.

7 PRC should easily be able to get 3100fps with 160 grain bullets. My little ole 7mmWSM can get that with 160's.
