7x57, 280, 7x64?

I have a stainless M70 in 270 that I am looking at turning into a small 7mm, to compliment my M70 in 9.3x62.

The original plan was a 7x57...but being a helpless gunnut I've been thinking (dangerous, I know).

Should I go 280 Rem instead? I'm not interested in a 280AI as I don't like the sharp shoulder.

Any reason to go for a 7x64, other than panache?

I even flirted with the idea of a 7RM, but I kind of like the idea of 5 in the mag.

Also, considering a Douglas #1 or #2 contour at 22". Thoughts on that?

7x57 is pure class, but the loads for factory are limited, and it pains me to say it seems to be getting very hard to find. That said everyone needs a 7x57.

If there is nothing wrong with the present .270 barrel why would you change to a .280 Remington to achieve the same ballistics with a bullet only 7 thousands of an inch larger in diameter?... or to any other 7mm? The .270 will do anything those three 7mm's will.

...and there are much better barrels than Douglas out there...

I have all of those and I would recommend the 7X64... it will make a perfect complement to your 9.3X62. It is a nifty cartridge, brass and ammo are easy to find and accuracy has proven to be excellent in both my M77 MKII and CZ 550. The Brenneke also provides a bit of a "cool factor," as it is less common. The S&B Torpedo bullets (Trade-Ex), do a great job on deer sized game.

I'm going to support the 7x57. If youre using a 9.3 youre very likely a handloader already. If not, the Hornady 7x57 loads are excellent.

That said, 140gr pills do very well in the 2800fps range and Lapua brass lasts lifetimes and is available.

If you need flatter the 120gr Ballistic Tip has proven to be incredibly tough as so has the TTSX.

Do yourself a favor and skip the douglas barrel. I like their contours though.

X3

guntech built me a 270 win with a McGowan barrel. That thing shoots amazing. The 7mm's you bring up have some flare to them in name only. Brass is probably easier to find too. However I understand the desire to have something different too. I've always wanted a 8x68S in a modern M70 or M700 action.

A factory 7x64 has the faster twist out of those 3, so you could shoot the heaviest .284 bullets you can get out of it.
That said, if you are going custom barrel, you can get whatever twist you like.

You're right the 270 does everything the others will....except scratch my itch. The optics and stock are already in the budget, and I'm looking at Douglas contours, probably a benchmark tube though.

I'm liking the idea of the 7x64. Is it pretty neck and neck with the 280 for velocity?

Since you have a 9.3x62 I would go with 7x64 or 7x57 to keep the Euro trend going. I do like the look and more power from the 7x64 thou.

Agree with all the above. I have 7 7x57's because they're classy. 7x64 for the extra range of which I have 3 (no Mr Hotycanon it ain't comin' back. I like it too much) LOL
Just snagged a ZG47 in mint condition in 7x57...oops sorry that's 8 now!
7x57 has go to be one of the most balanced calibres there is. Kilimanjaro Bell smoked over 1100 elephants the majority with the 7x57!
I have a 270 but prefer the 7x57. Better bullet sectional density.
A man with a 9.3x62 & 7x57 don't need anything else, but we're all Gunnutz so to each his own!
Got me an 8x68S too Markus!

I've owned and shot all three of those 7mm chamberings.
Interestingly, of those 3, I only own 7x57 rifles right now.
Just bought another 7x57 as well.
The 7x57 gives up very little to the 280 or the 7x64, and it
has been around since Moses, lol.
A very effective, mild mannered 7mm that refuses to take a back seat
to other non-magnum 7mms.
In a 24" barrel, a 7x57 will deliver 2950 with a 140, 2875 with a 150, and 2800 with a 160.
It is a big enough case to even develop respectable velocities with a 175 grain pill with the right powders.
If you haven't figured out what I am suggesting by now, I'm wasting my time. :) :) D.

I was always leaning toward the 7x57 to have a stainless option to compliment my wood blued 7x57 but my other ones are on Mauser actions that are better suited to the mid length cartridge. I got to thinking maybe I would just fill up the mag with a full length option

I think you get higher sectional density with the smaller diameter bullet (.277 in this case vs .284) when comparing same bullet weights.

280 has a hair more case capacity then the 7x64 if you are chasing velocity.

And on a side note. I've had a 7-08,7x57,7x64, and 2x 7mmRem. I culled the 7-08 which is a decent cartridge, but really was just being duplicated by the others. I still have the rest. If I HAD to get rid of one more it would unfortunately be the 7x57. Nothing wrong with it, but again being outshined by the 7x64. I can down load the 7x64 to those velocities if required. I run 175gr pills pretty much exclusively in the 7x64 at the middle of it's velocity range. Works very well.
The 7mmRem is becoming my favorite of the bunch. I think I can see getting rid of most of my overlap cartridges in the near future, just keep the largest case I can shoot comfortably in each caliber...can always down load if required.
