Ok guys I need some data for hornady's 162 gr boattail in a strong modern bolt gun, just picked up a new rifle and dont want to be limited to the manual's ridiculously underloaded data for this cartridge. I'll start a couple of grains below your suggested max to be safe but would like to know your best loads in the 140gr and 162gr weights and any chronographed velocities if you have it.
Thanks

Some hot loads for the 7x57.Have used them in my Ruger#1 with no problem.
160 grn.Nosler Partition.56 grns.of Norma Mrp.Very compressed load.
Chronographed at 2850 fps.
Nosler part 160 grn.49.4 grns.of Win 760.Vel.over 2700 fps.Quite accurate.
Nosler part 160 grn.52 grns.of Imr..4350 Vel about 2700 fps.All of these bullets are nearly touching the lands in my Ruger#1
I find that 2700 fps.is a good speed for the 160 grn and still has lots of killing power out to 500 yds. Will kill anything in North America

most modern load manuals suggest 45-46 grains of H4350 with a 160-162 gr. bullet. velocity ranges from 2500-2600 fps out of sporter length tubes. 48-49 grains of RL19 or IMR 4831 gets similar speeds.

work up slowly from below...

I did a search before stating a new thread and this one popped up.

I am looking for a 160 gr load for my 7x57 as well, and have read a book by Jack O'Connor where he states "...a charge of 50 grains of IMR 4350 will give a 160 grain bullet a velocity of 2825 in a 24 inch barrel." Nosler #5 gives 46 gr as max. but I feel that it is because of the lawyers who are afraid of old military actions coming apart. There are loads for 45-70 in a Ruger #1 so why not a load for the 7x57 in strong modern actions? Does anyone have an old reloading manual? What does it say?

I haven't played with the 160gr yet.

My rifle has a very long throat, keep in mind I seat the bullets very long which also gives me more room for the powder.
I started with 140gr PSP's for practice and then 145gr GS's for hunting. They shot okay but not anything to write home about.

24" barrel.

This last year I tried the 154gr Hornady Interbonds my best group is .400" for a three shot at 100 yards. I was shooting it yesterday and in three times in a row got two in one ragged hole, then I'd flinch and the third is an inch to the side. I am getting so good at flinching I can call it while Nugget watches in the spotter to confirm it! [sigh] ALways low to the left. Just like my chrony confirms!
