I just acquired a Ruger M77 RSI in 275 Rigby. Since it only has an 18 1/2" barrel, would it be more efficient to use a faster burning powder? From all my manuals and everything I have been reading, the 4350 powders seem to be a good choice and something I have available but I can't find anything regarding the shorter barrel length. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I will be using 150 gr. bullets.

The pressure curve drops quickly, so barrel length does not matter much to the powder. Most of the acceleration is in the first 12".

A longer barrel will give more velocity but the best powder in a long barrel is just as good in a shorter one.

4350, 4831 or 760 would be an excellent choice. A faster powder (like Varget) would give less velocity (about 150 fps less).

If you have several slow powders on hand, try 5 rounds of each just to check the noise level. Some powders generate a terrible bark in a short barrel. Some just have the normal loud bang.

the powders which provde the fastest velocity in a long barrel will also do so in a short barrel. You'd get the best speeds with RL17, Win 760, H414, Ramshot Hunter, CFE223, and RL16, Ramshot BigGame
