Hello Everyone. So im looking for some help on the 7x64. From what I have been reading is since there is a lack in info on this round most ppl I have found are saying use 280 data and work up... here is there is issue.. Im a 280 fan an know with first had experience that what the books tell you is a lot lower in pressure then need.. so my cunudrum.. I have factory European ammo here (TIG Brenneke 177gr with an MV of 2790) most reload data is hard to see 160gr in that ball park... Im not trying to compare or get those velocities(although would be nice) but he has givin me 100 175gr Sierra Gamekings that will stabize in this rifle and asked me to see if I can get a load worked up for him. Its an older Custom German man rifle from what I understand and its all I know lol. What I was planning on doing is takin my 280 load data and working up(but im experimenting with 150GMX and 160gr TBT) so not to sure if 7828,RL17-19,IMR 4831 are the powders of choice or not for heavier pills in the 7x64. I will be working up data 10% lower then book load and work my way up as i normally do.

(if it helps i currently load for 7-08 and 280) so hoping to use those powders/ components if possible

Thanks again

Josh

I use IMR 4831 in my 7x64 rifles, and VV N160. Other powders would work I'm sure, but would need to be in the a similar burn rate range. I have no trouble at all getting 2850 fps with 160 grain cup and core bullets in 22-23" barrel. USA data is pretty much useless for the 7x64. The USA data sources all assume that 7x64 case volume 2-3% smaller than the .280 Remington actually matters, without considering throat length. The throat of all of my 7x64 rifles is so long that a 160 gr. bullet is almost completely out of the case before it touches the rifling = LOTS of freebore. In my experience with four 7x64 rifles, ( two Brno M21's, a Steyr Mannlicher and a Sako M85) the 7x64 can be loaded to higher powder charges than the .280, and can achieve higher velocities at sane pressures because of the long throat specified by the European standards organization CIP. I like and use data from Norma and Lapua, using European powders like VV N160. The IMR4831 load I worked up was done by careful research and testing. After reaching the velocity I wanted, I loaded & fired the same three cases ten times. No loose primer pockets, no failed cases. I'm pretty sure that means it's a safe load.

I have not loaded 175's for my 7x64's yet, but the velocity achieved by RWS factory loads is not a fluke, you should be able to do that too.

Ken Waters Pet Loads 175gr Grand Slam bullets RWS brass/3.30 OAL/53gr IMR4831/2579fps near MAX .............53.5 MAX @ 2605 fps............................56gr MRP/2685fps extremely fine accuracy is the comment.51-52gr IMR 4350 accurate comment both just under 2700fps.

Measure h2O capacity of the 280 vs the 7x64. Quickload's default capacity for the 7x64 is 67.9grs water. The 280 Rem is listed identical, however the modest sample of 280 brass I have measured is averaging at 71.0grs

If the 7x64 capacity is 68-71grs, and the action is strong, you should be fine to use 280 Rem data. I wouldn't exceed unless the 280 data is really soft for semi auto Remingtons. A chronograph is your friend

Hey all thanks for all the info. After doing a lot of research and reading up on the 7x64 im going to try using my IMR7828. Vihtavuori lists 57.9gr of N165 and 57.1gr N560. Evidently 7828 falls right below 165 on the burn chart. I will try at 57gr of 7828 and work up from there and post my results. Unforanitly im without a chrony due to a 50gr Vmax just a little to low lmfao. it was a POS anyways. This load will only be used for White Tail deer here in Ontario so velocity isn't really concerning me. Im more concerned about a 175gr pill not performing as it should at mild velocities but time will tell.

Any more info would be nice and again I really appreciate everyone's input. IF 7828 doest work I will go to RL17 or RL19 as I have both here.

Thanks all again

Josh

I use 57.5 grains of imr 7828 ssc with a 175gr interlock @ 2710 fps with approx 1" 5 shot group. Shot a few deer and bear with it, no problems.

Quick load info:

7x64
175gr Hornaday interlocks
57.5 gr Imr 7828 SSC
Velocity from 22inch barrel 2710fps Approx 59,000 psi

Since the rimless 7x64Brenneke is typically chambered in actions similar to the 280Rem, the lower pressure round you know of is the rimmed twin 7X65R Brenneke which is designed for combination guns and drillings. My Hornady manual lists loads for the 7x65R with the caution that the data was obtained using a Mauser action so should be reduced 10-15% for use in combinations/drillings: Why they just didn't say "this load data is for 7x64, but if reduced 10-15% is appropriate for the rimmed 7X65" is beyond me.

Anyways, this book lists starting loads for 175gr bullets at 43.7gr IMR 4350 and 46.0gr of IMR 4831: Max loads are 50.7gr and 53.6gr respectively achieving 2700fps out of 26" barrel.

I've loaded 165gr gamechanger with rl17 to 50gr and got 2680fps(1"@100yd 4 shot), col 3.370", hornady case federal210. Not much of pressure sign apart from flat primer. next batch is loaded with rl22 up to 53.5gr, want to see if i can get closer to 2800fps.

woodleigh 140gr ppsn over 57.6gr of superformance gave 2980fps, just over an 1" 4 shot group, 3.270 col.

rifle is a zastava m70 stainless 22" in 7x64 of course, 1:8.6", long throat on this one.

keep us posted on your load testing, i will do the same when this extreme cold blows over.

Hey all thanks again for all the info. I was able to get to the range today and try out 3 loads. 57,57.5, 58 GR of IMR7828 with excellent results. Appart knowing there velocity 57gr gave me a 1" group for 3 shots, 57.5 was 1.25": and 58 was closer to 2". The rifle im assuming is rare to some extent but its a Krieghoff K.G.ULM . ITs a Mauser 98 action with an un marked assuming its 4 power 32 mm Carl Kiess Jena Zielvier. Its a single german 3 post with dot (strange to me)that's soldered to the bases which are on a quick attach system for quick easy use when in bush. There is no windage adjustment, last time it was adjusted was in the 80's. never been touched. sighted in with 175g bullets. IT has a butter knife bolt handle and double set triggers.
I showed him the groups today an was happy so im to make up 20 and they will try them next fall lol.
Thanks again
Josh

I use 280Rem data, also use 280Rem brass to load for my 7x64, using IMR4831 and 140gr AB, and 150gr LRAB. Tried some 120TTSX for fun and they shot well too.
