They are usually disassembled for the cases, and then loaded with black powder and fired in old 8 gauge shotguns. I believe the original clinker cartridges are fired from a gun of some type on a tripod into the steel blast furnaces to break up white hot clinker buildup.

The empty case can (so i have read) be swaged down it order to fit a standard chamber. This gives you hulls to reload with safe loads.
