800 yard mule deer heart shot

Many times, that's why its called hunting and not shooting...

You cannot understand the difference between 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 800 yards? At 800 yards everything to do with hunting is irrelevant. You're essentially shooting a target with a heartbeat.

Yes, excellent marksmanship. But long range shooting is no better than the "hunters" who drive around and shoot from their truck.

Gone are the days of hunters wanting to get close. Sad, really.

Lol

It's all hunting as far as I am concerned. I was close enough to a group of five elk this year that I could have placed the muzzle of my desert tech srs against one of their heads. And the rifle is only 28"oal.

If you can't accept there is greater skilled "hunters" out there than you, that is entirely a you problem and nobody elses.

Yes, marksmanship is part of "hunting" no matter how much you want to say it is not. Every hunter makes their own decision based off their skill level, you may want others limited to your skill level to even the odds for you, but that is not how hunting works.

And what is your aim responding to posts like his? Don't like it? Too bad, he wasn't looking for your approval either.

Sorta goes both ways, eh?

He's 100% correct in that there is literally zero hunting skill required to "hunt" at extreme range. Definitely shooting skills are required, but zero hunting skill, much like hunting from a truck....

You don't need to call it hunting if you don't want to...I call it food gathering "at its best".

Now a comment on your "hunting from a truck" comment...On Nov 11th (Armistice day if you are unaware of its significance), after an enjoyable couple hours in my truck, in a field, just watching for a buck, I was sitting in my living room chair, fire going, and a hot toddy in hand and was reminiscing about the 3 vets I was fortunate to spend a lot of time "food gathering" over the years (two are dead now and one ,at 95 is still alive). An episode back 30 years ago with one of those vets is very vivid in my memory and your "truck" comment brought it back.

After a mornings hunt, as was customary with us and a lot of other hunters from our small town, we all gathered at a local restaurant for a late breakfast...must have been 25 other hunters in the room at the time. One of the hunters was a city import b.i.l. of a local hunter. during the meal, this city dude piped up with a comment loud enough for the whole room to hear denigrating all road & truck hunters to be scum of the earth in his mind...I could see a look of discomfort come over the face of the Sicily-Italian campaigner from start to finish, WWll vet I was sitting with (and had been road hunting with for countless hours) and he turned to the guy and spoke...he had every person in the rooms undivided attention... "I spent many successful days hunting Germans on foot but I also spent many successful days hunting Germans from a motorized Bren gun carrier....if my country thinks its alright to hunt people from a vehicle...I think I can hunt a deer from one" and turned around to finish his meal...a round of spontaneous applause erupted...and we never seen that "city dude again.

if its hunting season, you follow all the laws and end up with a dead animal for the table then its hunting in my books.

Many people hunt by different methods, its the narrow minded people that can't accept things outside of their normal ways that keep dividing us as a group. No different than the west coast guys who think bear baiting in Ontario isn't hunting. Of course they have no clue what the bush looks like in Ontario and base all they think on some paid for hunting show they see on TV. Or the rich guy who duck hunts with guides who then belittles a new hunter for shooting a duck on the water.

Nobody is trying to convince you to hunt the same way they do, just sharing a good story. Not sure why people have to put down others methods if they are legal. As I'm sure your mother told you, "if you don't have anything nice to say then keep your mouth shut"

Good for you OP and congrats to your hunting partner.

I think you taking this you young man and working with him to up his skill and confidence level to be successful is very commendable. For a person who is handicapped to have the dream to apply for this hunt and to have you connect with him is remarkable. I’m sure this is a once in a lifetime moment. Pass the tissues.
Thanks
Don

Great story, hunting is like war, right?

Hell of a shot!!

I cant comment on if it counts as truly hunting or not, because i am able bodied and dont need to shoot from a truck or from super long distances, so i have to do the old fashion way of getting in close and all that. But if i lose that ability, i would hate to have to sit out every hunt because the only way i can harvest an animal is by using tactics some may deem un-sportsmanlike so good on the OP for helping this guy.

Ps: i hunt deer from a treestand so some consider that not really hunting. I also hunt turkey from a blind usually, and some consider that not really hunting.

YMMV

It’s all relative no one will ever agree on what’s ethical and what’s not. It’s all good I can respect everyone’s opinion and enjoy reading all the comments
