I'm looking at the 835 and SXP in turkey/waterfowl barrel combos, trying to decide if there’s any discernible difference between the two in reliability and support from dealers. With this covid thing still ongoing, I can’t really get out to shoulder anything from any of the dealers, so I’m beholden to you lot.

Well, this is an interesting question. Both guns you mentioned fit differently which is the most important factor when deciding on a shotgun. As for your intended use, I would recommend the 835 for turkey and the SXP for waterfowl. But you’re asking for one so I’ll say go with the SXP because it is a faster cycling pump which will benefit you while waterfowl hunting and it is easier to adjust yourself when hunting turkey with a waterfowl gun than vise versa

Im partial to the 835. The larger bore provides better patterning in my experience. It also fits me better as well.

I completely agree with the comment about patterns that an 835 is capable of throwing. This is why I recommend it for hunting turkeys.

A question for the OP....are you head set on a pump action shotgun?

the sxp has a real skinny profile. Its not my sx3, but feels close to it when shouldered. The sxp would get my nod 100%.

I also believe browning has a rebate on their turkey guns right now.

A pump gun will do just fine and in some cases better.

Dont under estimate the 2.75" shell. I still knock big nothern divers and canada geese out of the sky with an old rem 1100 on the lakes. If i use a 3.5" shell its in a 10ga. Either way best of luck

My findings as well with the 835. Being a 10 ga bore & choke tube unit with a 12 ga chamber, these buggers make very good patterns for trap shooting
as well as tossing field loads on game birds. I only wish Mossberg would bore their barrels smoother & put stiffer action bars on the buggers to get rid
of the wobbly forend feel.

I have an SXP with an extra defender barrel. Finish is nice, matte and offers a good corrosion resistance compared to a blued firearm. However, the inner portion of the mag tube is not finished the same as the external finish of the gun. Keep an eye on this when used in swamp or bodies of water. Also, the magazine spring is not even blued. When I got mine, I stripped the gun thoroughly and lubed every potential rust spot. Also, multiple choke tubes availability makes this a versatile gun. Not the best in the market, but maybe one of the best bang for your buck. There are weak points like the mag throat, but overall, a good entry level shotgun. Best feature is weight.
