840 lock repair

A win-cooey 840 12 ga. automatically opens when shot(vigorously). The latch spring is strong, no obvious damage to the barrel latching mechanism. Any suggestions as to repair? Local gunsmiths are expensive and occasionally inept.

Make sure the locking surfaces are completely free of all oil and grease. Look for wear (shiny) surfaces to determine how much contact is being made on the locking surfaces. Some stoning will true up the bearing surfaces. Most times this will help. How much side waggle does the barrel have when the action is open? If more than 6 or 7 thousand a plastic shim (lid from coffee can) between the hardware and fore end will reduce the slop. Being a 840 yours likely has a plastic fore end connector. Try to replace it with a metal one too.

Look for pine needles in the action.
Do the barrel and receiver have the same serial number?

No side waggle barrel , appears to be very tight fit. I removed the buttstock, blew out a little unburned powder and one jackpine needle. The barrel and receiver have same serial number. I removed oil on lock and gently sanded barrel lug sideways with coarse paper. Need to (cautiously) try it again! thanx

Sounds like the wedge (actuated by the top snap) isn't fully mating in the triangular cutout in the barrel lump (under the extractor). As Darryl pointed out, look for shiny surfaces and have someone knowledgeable fix it.

I had problems with mine after i decided to put a dab of grease on it, cleaned it up and shes was good to go.
