But if I had to choose I'd get the 858. Better ergonomics and accuracy. Removable external magazines. And just because it looks the sh!t.

The 858 shoots better, looks more evil, has removable 30(5) round mag so it's my choice as well. But if one can afford $700 for a VZ, then I don't see why they cannot pay an extra $200 for nice Russian SKS...

For the cost of an 858, I think I'd rather have a stainless Mini-30. But for $225-ish for an SKS .. that's hard to say no to.

If you shot surplus 7.62 x 39 out of a Mini-30 you might change your mind. The firing pin seems to be too light of a tap and you get a huge amount of "duds". I am sure this can be remedied so if you are rich, buy the Mini-30 and spend some more to get it to work properly.

I looked at the 858 a few years ago. Didn't like the wood chip stock or the painted metal or the lightweight feel of it. Anyways, I had an SKS-D then so my craving for cheap centerfire rifle shooting was satisfied.

Then came the Russkie SKS flood of 2009. I was glad I didn't spend my cash on an 858, and bought 4 Tulas from Lever. Sold my D as well.

I'll put my money on SKS over the 858 anytime....3 for one deal, yeah.

I am looking to get an 858 in the next few months, myself. However, there is no doubt in my mind that I'll eventually get an SKS as well.
