My project for 2011 hunting season is to get a good 100 yard load together for my 858. The problem I'm running into is jamming when I use real brass. I've tried just replacing the m43 ball surplus rounds with a 123g spt hornady with decent success, but who wants to hunt with corrosive primers. I also don't want to be depending on czech surplus in the future to make ammo.

The jam seems to be from the brass catching on the chamber side and sideways stovepiping. I noticed that if I pull the action back as far as I can and let loose, it will feed, but the brass gets a big ding and the exposed lead tip gets really deformed.

I've also tried factory s&b and PRVI, same issue.

I have a possible solution, though far from ideal: gently place the round right INTO the chamber, push it right forward, then let the bolt carrier go forward? Basically I'm saying use it as if it were a single-shot bolt-action, as they don't even have magazines at all.

Yea, not what you really want to hear I'm sure...alternatively, maybe you could bring a bit of Windex or CLP with you on the hunt, clean it after the shots? At least neutralize the corrosion...
 
What powders and bullets are you using? Have you tried different charges or just starting loads?

...saying in particular, that if you "break in" the CZ858 VZ-58, with a full case of surplus steel cased ammo (typically 1100 to 1200 rounds, roughly $180, pretty cheap per round, but it's corrosive so you need to clean it that night after shooting, particularly the gas block area), afterward they normally cycle brass loads no problems. Also there is more info there.
