858 spliting cases.

Upon picking up my empties at the range today I found that a small number of them had split. They only split a little bit though right on the neck and shoulder of the cases for about 1/4 of an inch. I was shooting Czech surplus at the time.

Has anybody else noticed this?

How many had split? If it was 50% or so I would advise to stop shooting the rifle and get the headspace checked. If it was only a small few then just keep your eye on things to make sure they are not starting to split with more regularity. Once in a blue moon I get splits with Nork steel case ammo (around 2-5 per 200 rounds fired), have not shot much Czech ammo though so I do not know if it is more prone to splitting or not.

I have circa 3000 roudns through mine and no split cases. Sometimes it dents the case pretty good near the business end, but no splits.

edit: I have shot a mix of SA, czech, norc, and federal

Splits in the neck/shoulder area are unlikely to be headspace related. Could be ammunition related. You could try other ammunition, and see if it occurs.

There were splits on ~5%, so I'll just keep an eye on it for now.
