Am looking to get a new barrel for the 870. Ideally something for taking on ducks....

Any suggestions on which barrel would work best? Given the list from Remington....

Hi. No rifled barrels or scopes. Ducks are normally hunted with a full choke. The barrel lengths tend towards long barrels. 28 to 30 inches. A 26" will do though.
Remchoke tubes run around $20 each.
Duck hunting requires a small game hunting licence and a Federal Migratory Bird permit. You get a Federal Migratory Bird permit from the Post Office.

^^^^^what he said. A vent rib 28" would be fine. A 30" 3,1/2" (if you have an express receiver) and you could hunt ducks and geese. $29.99 for a Rem full choke most places. For some reason they charge a few$ more for the full.

Pattern your gun if you are going to get more than one choke. You might be surprised on how tight a pattern some loads will produce with mod and IC chokes.

I run a 28" vent rib barrel with remchoke. For field shooting I use a Wad Wizard Supreme choke and a Remington Over Decoys (IC) choke, over decoys.

Balance and swing are affected by barrel length. Typically gun manufacturers design for neutral handling/balance with the 28" barrel.

Do NOT use a typical "full choke" or you could damage your gun or hurt yourself, read the box your shells come in. Buy a barrel that you can thread a choke into. Get an improved or modifyed, I use the high flyers super mods and the wad stripper line.

Remington does make full choke tubes that are rated for steel shot and marked accordingly. In fact, Remington says that their older barrels with fixed full chokes are OK with #1 or smaller steel shot.

That said, you may get better patterns from a more open choke.

In NL you do not need a small game license to hunt migratory birds.

First off what model 870 do you have .the express and the wingmaster have different finishes.the express has a parkerized finish and the wingmaster has a gloss blued finish.I my self would go with a 28" barrel that accepts chokes.steel shot patterns tighter than lead so for waterfowl I would go mod or imp cyl if shooting over decoys.

Besides matching finish if it matters to you, one thing you have to watch is compatibility between Express and other models. The Express uses a different setup to retain the magazine cap compared with the ball detent found on the barrel lug of the Wingmaster (gloss blue) and Special Purpose (Parkerized, I think) barrels. If you use an Express barrel on a gun without the plastic Express endcap/plug retention parts, you will have to use blue Loctite to keep the cap from loosening unless you have the ball detent installed.

Great tips guys.
I think I'll go for the:

Wingmaster Light Contour Barrels - Vent Rib / 26" VT/LC / Rem Choke²
(Supplied with Full, Modified, & Improved Cylinder choke tubes)

Will let you know how it works out!!!
