I read somewhere that some 2 3/4" 870 receivers will work with a 3" shell if you put a 3" barrel on them.
Is this right? I thought a 2 3/4" was a 2 3/4".
If it is true, is there a way to identify the 3" capable 2 3/4" receiver?

Sure would make the hunt for a used 3" Wingmaster easier.:)

The ones that will I would assume are marked 3".
A 2 3/4" barrel will go right on, the extractor is different, and can be pretty easily swapped.

I know that a 3" receiver will work.
What I read, and was questioning was whether by putting a 3" barrel on an 2 3/4" 870 receiver, is it possible to shoot 3" shells. I assume that it is safe, but would the 3" shells cycle/eject?

Thanks for the reply.

The serial number suffix tells you what the receiver is; V= 2¾"(12ga) and M= 3"(12ga)

No, you can't add a 3" barrel to a 2¾" and expect it to function with 3" er's.

That's what I thought. When I read that it would work, I figured that I'd died and gone to heaven.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I read that somewhere also, that after a certain year wingmaster receivers were all made to handle 3". Think I read it on this site, lol

You are correct.

When Remington phased out the 2¾" only guns for the 3" guns they used up old stock in the way of receivers, barrels, ejectors and ejector springs. Some 2¾" marked receivers will work with 3" shells, but I don't know of any cutoff date or serial number.

Someone who can tell the difference between the ejectors and ejector springs by sight can identify the receivers.
