wondering about lenght and configurations of remington factory 870 barrels.

friend of mine works for a private company that used 870 shotguns once upon a time, recently I went to see him and he had two 870 barrels and offered them to me. I said I would look into it, but im leaning towards them being prohibited chunks of steel at the moment.

both seem to be 14'', and dont appear to have been cut, unless it was a very pro job. the (badly worn) blue is even through out (no newer, darker spot by the muzzle), and both are straight. the thing that throws me is there is no front sight bead or any sign one was ever on it.

has remington ever sold an 870 with a barrel that would match the above description?

the barrels have been kicking around for the 15 years he has been there, and god knows how long before.

thanks in advance for the info

I am fairly certain that they made a 14 inched police version of the 870. However they would naturally have a bead site on them.

It wouldn't be that hard to cut them, it isn't like you have to redo the crown or anything on it.

Sounds like it's been chopped. I don't see any gun company making a barrel without a bead on it. Check the side of the barrel for what it's choked for. If it's anything other than improved or cylinder thats a pretty good indication.

i hear you guys about the beads, but I cant understand for the life of me while this company would have chopped the barrels. They are absolutley anal retentive about their firearms, and i have serious reserves bubba was given the barrels and a hack saw to take home the weekend. didnt think to check for a choke stamp, but i doubt ill see them again anytime soon.

14" yes. A 14" Police barrel without a ramp and bead, never.

A 14" barrel without a ramp would shoot too high even if it only had a bead installed. So a ramp is a must.

Sounds fishy that their bluing is evenly worn 'throughout' as you mentioned. Obviously if the barrels were cut, the blueing around the muzzle would be worn from dressing the muzzle. Thinning the blueing over the rest of the barrel would camouflage the cutting and dressing at the muzzle.

REM barrels have markings on the port side of the chamber that identify the date of manufacture. With these markings, REM can ascertain exactly when a barrel was made and narrow down which sized barrels were shipped with which receiver at that time.

Also, if these barrels are not magnum barrels, (only accommodate 2 3/4" shells), that's a give away right there.

If the barrel size ever came into question, not having a factory ramp and bead installed could be sufficient doubt for the onus to fall on you to prove its authenticity.

Jason, as tempting as it may be, I'd stay away from them.

Companies, or agencies that are licensed to carry firearms can legally keep whatever sized barrel cut or otherwise, by them or others. But when these barrels enter the civilian market, they are phohibs to us. Case in point, the 16 barrel fiasco as of recent if you've been following the threads a month ago or so.

On the other hand, a barrel is nothing but a metal tube. The tube itself cannot be prohibited unless it's a handgun barrel. I would not worry one bit owning a cut down 870 barrel. The cut down barrel restriction was intended to stifle criminals from easily concealing firearms. We are responsible firearms owners and I resent being assumed a criminal because I own a cut down piece of pipe.

yes they definatly need a front ramp as many have noted already.

A agency local to me recently had a pile of cut down 14" barrels in their legal possesion, they did not have ramps and you could clearly tell they were not real 14" factory barrels.
