I was always under the impression that any 870 barrel will fit on any 870 gun, assuming the same gauge. Well, that is not the case. 870 Express barrels will not fit on at least 1 Wingmaster, the retaining feature on the barrel is a spring loaded ball and the magazine tube is plugged with a metal plug, the barrel retention ring is also shorter. The standard 870 express barrel will also not fit on a magnum defender with mag extension, unless you keep the mag extension, the mag tube does not have the indent to take a standard 870 mag stop, the plastic ones.

Anyone run across the short barrel retention ring version? I read it has to be the special field but the gun has a pistol grip stock and not the straight stock of the special field gun. The mag tube is only slightly shorter than the standard 870 express.

My wife's Wingmaster wears an Express barrel. To stop the cap from coming off I put a strip of plumbers thread tape under it. Works fine, replace tape once a year or so. Her gun is 70s era 2 3/4" and the 3" barrel was purchased new circa 2010ish

My understanding was Super Magnum barrels do not fit 2 3/4" or 3" receivers (by extension, standard/Magnum barrels do not fit Super Magnum receivers.

The rifled barrel I have is just an express barrel, fits my super mag just fine, but the ring that goes over the mag tube is not in the same location as the wingmaster.

I emailed remington and since they split as a company they told me if I want the serial number details I would have to go to the judge in Alabama, ha ha ha.

Well, I screwed that one up, must not have locked in the ejector properly, the express barrel fits, just have to do as blasted_saber said and throw some teflon tape on there to lock the cap on.

I will blame the kids, they got sick, I could not figure out this shotgun and then my hunting trip next week was cancelled due to this lingering illness.

Last I saw S&J has a wave washer 3 pack that solves the barrel nut problem, Teflon tape will work fine though.

Nordic marksman carries wave washers from Wilson combat, not sure if others do. It’s a solution if you don’t have the mag dimples or your running an extension.

Early to mid 80's is when Rem started manufacturing the 1/8" narrower receivers for the 20ga,28ga & 410's.

Early 870 Bbl lug has the detent ball to retain the mag tube cap & a metal piece to retain the mag tube spring...which is removable.

Any vintage 870 Bbl will have the 2 letter date code of manufacturing 1.5" forward of the receiver shoulder.
(Exception- Any Rem product-1999-2001 the Bbl manuf date code was NOT stamped in the Bbl...it is listed on the box/product sticker)

Early 870 mag tubes do not have the dimples to retain the follower & spring...which has a slot in the follower to rotate it to remove it.

Depending on original configurations w/ OEM Rem 1 piece extended magazine tube, the Bbl lug is positioned farther down the Bbl & will not interchange w/ a std 870.
(I do not have my notes present to quote each specific model)

Any trigger group of any vintage will interchange between receivers by changing the lifter for that specific gauge.

The SPS plastic trigger housing lifter will fit & function on any aluminum trigger housing...lifter being gauge specific.

No tape or wave washers or O rings are required to retain the magazine end cap...if you have a quality tube extension.

Can you explain that a bit more? How does that work?

A pipe wrench w/a 2 foot cheater bar or any plumbing or hydraulic pieces are NOT required to tighten the magazine cap to hold a Rem 870 Bbl in the receiver & mag tube.

Hand tighten...snug.
Shoot
Loosen to remove & clean the Bbl.
Reinstall...hand tight.
