870 Entry BBL

i bought the 870 police magnum with a 18.5" barrel, if i bought a 14" barrel, would i be legal with that?

Many GunNutz have reported successfully re-registering (with the CFC) exactly that. Ask the CFC. You'll find them willing to accommodate your change.

As long as the barrel was manufactured at 14", it's fine. By contrast, if you have a long barrel, the shortest it can be cut is 18.5".

I've been through this.

Like already mentioned as long as it's a factory made barrel (14", 12.5", 8.5" by Remy, Norinco, Dlask, etc) you're fine.

are they matte or blue?

Most barrels will have no markings at all indicating the length. I have both a 14" HP9 as well as a Remington factory 14" barrel and neither one of them have any markings that would distinguish it from a cut down. I do believe that Dlask marks the length on their barrels though.

Either way it's no big deal, just be sure to contact the CFC and give them the new barrel length.

So, just to clarify (because I'm not that bright)...

I own a Rem 870, purchased as a kit with 20" and 26" barrels.

If / when I buy a 14" or 11.5" tube as a third barrel, I need to register the barrel length change, even if the shortest barrel is not always mounted on the shotgun?

Thanks in advance,

Neal

Just call the CFC and tell them how you plan on using the shotgun. They will probably change your cert to read "multi" under the barrel length section. Best to have it listed for the shortest length anyway, since no CO is going to question if your 26" barrel is legal. My cert just says "under 470mm", but I've heard they sometimes list the actual length of the barrel, one of my AR's is registered that way.
