870 expert?

He should ask on here after he gets some "expert" to fix it, just to see how much he could have saved just by asking.

Ok looking to get a pump shotgun for my son who wants two barrels. We bought our son in law an 870 for camping and had to send it back to get the chamber polished so are all the poor quality stories true like poor extractors or not or should i go to a Mossberg? Dan

Another option is to order a barrel hone and the chamber hone from Brownell‘s,they are relatively inexpensive and you can do many shotguns with one. I ordered one to fix problems with an 870s, but did a few shotguns after that. Absolutely every shot gun that we polished the bore with produced better patterns. In the end it’s a worthy investment and it also makes cleaning build up of lead easy if you shoot a lot of slugs. The Mossberg is a good shot gun,but it has one flaw. The one Pin retention of the trigger assembly can cause a failure as the two plastic dogs that replace the pin and engage the receiver can wear out and cause malfunction in the safety or in operation, that is why I stay away from Mossberg. Polish the chamber and the barrel of a Remington, put a new extractor in it if you like( although that is not necessary) and you are good to go. Getting a wing master is also another way. In the end you get what you pay for. Old Wingmasters are awesome. Lots on EE

Lol. That's a new one.
I love these 870:500 threads.

The last Express 870 that I picked up, before even shooting it, I replaced the extractor with a Volquartsen one from Brownells. I also polished the chamber using a bore brush on a cleaning rod chucked into a drill, a little oil and about 1 min. of time. Cleaned her up and no problems shooting everything that I put through it.

Some 870s can be a bit rough. But nothing that can't be fixed with a little bit of buffing.

The design is sound. Parts are cheap and plentiful.

Youtube is full of how-to videos.

Same here, minus the extractor that is. Gave it a full tear down and inspection, no rough machining or burrs. Chambers looked and felt smooth but I polished them anyway, gave it a lube and reassembled. Has functioned perfect so far.

Look at a Weatherby PA459, way smoother from the company than any 870 or Mossberg, changeable ported chokes, lighter, and a better position in hands.

The barrels on newer 870s can be very rough on the inside. On two brand new 870 Police models I could feel the tool marks when I inserted my little finger into the muzzle. And one of my 870 Express guns had extraction issues.

Here is what I did to polish the inside of the barrel and chamber:

1.) Use a copper or brass 12ga bore brush on a cleaning rod
2.) Use a hand drill on the other end of the cleaning rod
3.) Wrap very fine steel wool around the 12ga bore brush
4.) Spray steel wool and bore brush with oil .... and spray inside of barrel with oil
5.) With low speed polish the inside of the barrel and chamber.

This solved two problems for me ...

a.) it solved the excessive leading of the barrel when shooting slugs
b.) and it solved my extraction issues

It is a simple and cost effective method for polishing the inside of a smooth-bore barrel ....
And that is how I clean my barrels now after having shot slugs ....

Hope this helps ....
