I took my new Remington 870 Express to the range this past weekend.

While loading it I experienced a jam where a shell was forced under the shell latch by the follower.

I removed the barrel and was able to clear it by cycling the action.

When I e-mailed Remington they told me to take it to a service center. After some of the posts about their customer service I'm kinda leary.

Someone at the range mentioned that it is a common problem with 870's.

Could there be something wrong with my gun or is this a freak occurance?

Is there a way to prevent this or a method of clearing these jams. I'm new to the model so any help you guys could provide would be really appreciated.

Thanks again

Not a common problem. The 870 has been made since about 1952 and this occurs occasionally. It is still one of the finest pumps made. Some times it is the fault of cheap ammo made to incorrect specs, sometimes it is a minor adjustment by one who knows how, sometimes it is operator error. As far as being leery about Remington's customer service, I would be more leery of trying to fix it yourself.

In a legal and safe way, preferably with dummy ammo, try and duplicate what occurred. Make sure you stuff the shell fully in the magazine. Failure to do that can cause problems. Also make sure you don't short shuck the action when cycling a round. Fully to the rear and fully forward.

If the problem persists take it to a qualified "smith" who knows 870's and pay to have it fixed if you can't find a Remington repair depot close.
