Hello, tried a search and no luck. Looking to buy a new 870 and was wondering if the Wingmaster was worth the extra money. I know they look nicer do they function the same? feel the same, shoot the same etc.? All opinions greatly appreciated.

Basically, the Express and Wingmasters are exactly the same except for the finish. The Express is bare-bones with a rough finish and birch or synthetic stock. The Wingmaster is highly polished/blued with a nice walnut stock. The Wingmasters are far smoother to operate given the better finish on the operating parts.

I think the Wingamaster is worth the extra expense unless you are looking for a beater/utility gun to bash around in a boat while duck hunting or use on the salt water.

I've owned both as well as the discontinued Special Purpose model which I still own.

Express hmm ,have 2 in the cabinet, the finish on both were gone the first year as well as trigger repairs twice, have 3 870 wingmasters and they are twice in my opinion the gun.Have worn out a wingmaster don't think that an express would last that long:confused:

Used a Wingmaster for over thirty years.Shot thousands of rounds through it
and it still shoots as new.Looks a bit used though.

The barrels are different as well, and you can feel the difference when shouldering the gun.

To me there is no comparison between the two.

Supercub, SELL ME THAT GUN!!!!!!!!!

Yes, have both, but my express is from the 80's, and it's all steel:)

just picked up a newer 11-87 sportsman, and the receiver is just like the new express', really really cheap feeling and poor finish, but I've been spoiled:)

I too picked up my wingmaster magnum on the EE for only $300

Savagefan have been told there is less machine steel and more pot metal in the trigger assemblyon the express just to keep costs down, I love 870's but do not have the same feeling with expresses simply the express has let me down the wingmasters have never...

Who told you that?

As I stated above, the only difference between the two is the finish and the trigger group. They are the same weight.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy an Express.

870 Wingmasters (atleast the new ones) have a LC (light contour) barrel which is quite a bit different then the Express barrels.

Believe what you want the fact is the EXPRESS is an all round cheaper gun one that has in my case broken down more than once,so IF I was buying ,it would based on my Experiance NOT be another express , end of story....

Reddog, I agree.

There is no comparison of the two. It is like comparing a basic Honda Civic and a loaded Honda Prelude.

I would, just once, like to meet someone with a broken Express.

My clients haven't had any problems with them. Most of the 870's I've worked on, have now been Expresses.

I haven't seen a broken one, but I have seen two that did not cycle properly. Due to the poor machining of parts I believe.
