Hi fellas, might not be a gunsmithing question but does anyone know where I can find a non-MIM extractor for my 870 in the Vancouver area?

to satisfy the gunsmithing thread here is a picture of my express with the bolt I just polished.

What do you think it wrong with MIM parts? In any case, a machined extractor will cost a fortune. And it's a wee tiny thing.

The extractor isn't the problem, it's the chamber and cheap shells.

There is nothing wrong with the MIM part.

I agree. Unless the extractor is broken, there is nothing wrong with it just because of the way it was manufactured, It the cheap shells. Sometimes the rear of the chamber can be polished more and relieve the problem with the cheap ammo.

I had the same problem with my 870. The extractor isn't the problem.....

I polished the chamber and I never had the problem after. I now run cheap federal birdshot with out trouble.

yeah I'm gonna polish the chamber as well. The whole point in buying a 870 was to be able to shoot anything I could find through it, after-all that is what made them famous!

Thanks for the reply's.

I still want to upgrade the extractor if anyone knows where I can find one locally....

cheers.

I think in this case "upgrade" equates to 'spend money'. In 45 years of gunsmithing I think I have only seen 2 broken 870 extractors.

Brownell's carries them, but just about any gunsmith should have them. If you swap out the extractor, you might as well do the spring at the same time for what they cost

Don't agree it is money well spent. Check them side by side, then pick the one that will grab better it is not the issue of them breaking so much
Also in those 45 years most of which MIM didnot exist Hook profile is very poor on the mim

Since MIM has been used, I have never replaced an extractor on an 870. I haven't seen any worn out. I've built enough 870's on the Express line.

My skeet 870's have worn out many an extractor all non MIM ones
One thing to shoot 100 rounds out of a 870 a year another to shoot 5000 or so.
In fact my 28ga wingmaster skeet is on it's third one plus split a bolt . Cannot imagine how many MIM it would be through by now not three that is for sure
IMO for 15 bucks to improve the gun why not but to each their own
Cheers

My original 870, circa 1979, has had well in excess of 10000 rds through it, from skeet/trap loads to slugs, and I'm still using the same extractor.

Yes and some have 10X that with original extractors but remember they are not MIM
Also the high brass on the 28ga hulls works / wears the extractors more than a 12ga shooting target hulls
Cheers

Curious, how does brass work or wear steel? It's the other way around.

I have never replaced an 870 extractor because it was worn, only because it either was lost or it actually broke in half. 2 in 45 years... I have have no idea how any of them were manufactured.
