hey all, just picked up a remington 870 P this weekend (first long gun:D).

i've only been loading snap caps in it, and im finding that it often binds up at 5 in the tube. the spring still pushes back and forth with force about 1mm, and based on the length of 5 cartridges, i think the back of the follower is hitting where the 2 shot extension connects but i'm not sure. just cleaned the tube, spring, and follower but the problem still happens.

Anyone know whats wrong or knows how to fix it?

I found when I added an extension tube to my 870, it did not quite thread 100% in once it was snugged up with the barrel. The result was perhaps just a little bit of exposed thread, and the associated gap. (this is probably correct, as you want to be able to snug that barrel up, rather than running out of thread). Anyhoo, I found that the follower itself was catching on that little internal gap between the 870 magazine tube and the start of the extension tube.

My solution was, since it was a delrin hi-viz follower, to put the follower in a drill press, spin it, and use some sand paper to generously round off the edges of the follower. Now the follower slides effortlessly over the little gap and simply does not get hung-up.

I don't know if this is the cause of your problem, but it is worth a shot.

do i need round off both ends of the follower? when i took it out of the mag tube it was surprisingly cheap feeling like something you'd find in a kinder egg. looked like the tube was scratching up the sides of it pretty bad too

If it is that el chepo red plastic cup follower that comes with the gun, then modifying it is likely a lost cause. It's far too feeble and thin to do anything with.

This is the one I used, from Brownells. Hard to go wrong for $9.

I just had to round off the leading and trailing edges a little so they would jump the mag-tube/extension gap without getting hung up. Other than that, it worked great. I like the lime green color, as it is very visible.

yeah, it's the el cheapo orangy standard one. rounded the edges off the back of it and it seems to be acceptable for now. will definitely look into a different follower though.

It almost sounds like you might have a newer gun that someone screwed an aftermarket 2-shot extension to but never removed the dimples from the mag tube...but that can't be...because you said "it often binds" . Is that correct or you can never load more than 5? The gun an actual 870P? Or a "built up" look-a-like?

I had the same problem with my 870 tac express. In my case the male thread on the magazine tube were slightly crimped inwards. I believe this is from me cranking the 2 shot extension on too tightly. Casey at TacOrd re-sized the opening using a properly sized socket. It functions perfectly now.
Have a look at yours and see if your follower can pass freely by the end of the mag tube.

it passes freely on both the mag tube and the extension and i dont feel any crimping when i took the extension off. im starting to wonder if the parkerizing on the threads isn't allowing me to screw the extension in as far as it should go leaving a gap. i'm able to load 6+1 after polishing the back edges of the follower, but now i've had it stick a few times coming outwards and the shells would just move around inside the tube by gravity. polished the front corners of the follower now too, so hopefully that fixes it.
