So here we are about 4 weeks from Christmas and I have two sons that are obliged to buy me something.

What are your thoughts or recommendations on a fore end with light either attached or built in? What have you tried and liked, or not liked?

FWIW the 870 has a 14 remmy barrel, and I have a spare fore end tube assembly if I want to readily swap on or off.

I have a Surefire DSF (2 actually) nothing else comes close.

If price is an issue a Magpul fore end with a Klarus high output will work in a pinch. I found it's great outdoors will light up to 75-100yards but in a house you blind yourself off the walls. Surefire is a nice mix of decent output outside but a warm light when working indoors.

Surefire too.

I upgraded my feeble old 60 lumen head to a single 123 cell 300 lumen Malkoff device.

Some people complain about the chunkiness and lack of grip on the new dsf. But the shape is perfect for the push pull method of recoil control. The chunky head gives you something to push against to mitigate the recoil impulse.
I love mine, and it's super bright to boot.

Yes, I was told police agencies hate the new DSF forend that they actually went back to the original one.

I've upgraded mine from incan bulb to LED.

There are companies that make DSF fitted grip tape. Anything works though, the reason they did not make it grippy was because police agency's wanted to use there gloves with it and not shred them. I use tacky shooting gloves and I don't feel out of control in any way it also fits the hand better for button manipulation vs the older models in my opinion. I've owned both.
