I want to swap out the beat wooden fore end on my 12ga. Express. The butt was no problem. I removed the fore end from the shotgun and removed the nut that holds the wood on. However, it does not want to come off. It rotates about a 1/4" but that is all. I don`t want to hammer on it in fear of ruining the threads. Is it just being stubborn or am I missing something? I would like to save it to refinish. If not, can I just cut it off? Suggestions please.

I had the same problem with removing the wooden fore end from my old 870.

What I decided to do, and it worked well, was to thread the retainer back onto the threaded tube 2-3 full turns.
I then took a long plastic handled screw driver and placed the metal part of the screw driver into/inside the round metal tube until the flat forward part of the screw driver handle was resting against the retainer.
I had to try a few different screw drivers to find the right size, so the handle would fit inside the fore end opening and still make good contact against the face of the retainer.
I hit the end of the screwdriver handle with a small hammer.
After several hits it pushed the retainer down until it bottomed out (approx. 1/4").
I then turned the retainer back a couple of turns and one more tap drove it down a bit further.
I then removed the retainer completely.
After that it was relatively easy to remove the wooden forend from the metal pump assy.

Hope this helps.
I'm sure others will provide comments on how they removed theirs.

Thank you Blackacres. That worked slicker than snot on a door knob. Took about three minutes.
