870 jamming in the cold, any help?

So it seems that every time I take my 870 out in the cold or crappy weather a get a jam. It will be smooth for a while and then maybe 50-75 rounds in it just doesn't want to eject the shell so I have to really hammer on the pump to get the action to slide open... My Benelli has never once had this problem. I clean them both very thoroughly after every trip and treat them both the same. What's the deal? Do I need some special cold weather/rain lube for my 870?

Is your 870 an Express? The Express models sometimes have rough chambers that can cause extraction problems.
 
as with any metal if it heats up then cools down it might be freezing, this could be happening. but then I have never used my 870 in the cold. I wonder if this would happen to a mossberg as the frame is not steel.
 
I take mine out in the coldest weather,take all the oil and grease off the gun inside the trigger, safety and all parts,slides ect ,my guess it will be fine.

I just bought an 870 a month ago and the same thing is happening to mine. I 'll go shoot clays and every fifth or so jams and it almost seems that it is mechanically jamed not a lube issue. It has only done it in the cold -5 or -10 but then again I wouldn't have any warm weather experience with it unless I shot trap in the livingroom.

I dont know how it even gets cold though I put 50- 75 rounds an hour through it

I think mine might just go back.

So, what kind of ammunition are you shooting?

What makes you think it's the cold? Because your Benelli doesn't jam?

Your description sounds like the classic issues caused by shooting Wally-World Federal ammunition. Try something of better quality.
 
check the chamber. if it looks like this then polishing it would be a good idea:

I agree with "easy". That used to happen to me when I used cheap ammo. Try some better ammo and see if problem goes away. I bet it will.
 
I have experienced the same problem only in the cold weather... Mine is pretty new, i am hoping it will get better once its broken in.

manbearpig you mentioned polishing the chamber, which parts exactly?
 
hmmm, maybe it is the ammo but I doubt it, it even jammed once with a 3 inch Federal slug... The gun is an 870 Tactical by the way. Anyway, maybe it is the ammo but I think I'm going to try some of this graphite lube as well. Also, the idea of the metal expanding and contracting because of cold and heat makes sense, the only problem with that theory though is that I'm only shooting in like 2-3 degree weather, not anything below zero I don't think...
