Why do some recievers have cross bolts and some not? Are they an upgrade?

The only crossbolts I know of is the crossbolt safety and they have always had that.

are you talking about safeties? if so it's just the particular style of safety. i.e. the cil model 607(savage model67) has both styles of safety on the same model of gun, cross bolt and on top of the reciever. this sort of thing usually require a change in the style of the stock as well. may have something to do with availability at time of manufacture.

Cross bolts

Sorry guys, The pins that hold the trigger group in. The LE guns look bolted, where some 870's "like mine" are pinned.

All 870s, including 870Ps use pins. What you might be seeing are the bolts that replace the pins when a sidesaddle is installed. The bolts aren't better than the pins, they are just necessary to hold the side saddle on.
