Tried to search for a thread on the best way to remove mag tube dimples but came up empty handed.

So I just picked up an 870 Express and will be ordering a couple small parts from S&J for it (no jam follower, mag spring) and was thinking about grabbing a +2 or +3 mag extension for it and I know I'll have to remove or flatten the mag tube dimples to install it. What's the best way to get rid of the dimples, anyone want to share their experience. I'd like to avoid drilling them out.

This will mainly be a hunting shotgun but it came with a 20" barrel and I like the look of the mag tube flush with the barrel, I have no problem keeping it as it is. I have another 12g with a 20" barrel and full length mag tube so it's no big deal, figured if I was going to buy an extension I should do it now and combine parts on shipping cost.

what we do it we have the Dimple razing tool? if u want to call it that, we use that, then i grind and polish the inside of the tube and then touch up wit ha cold blue , if its a customers gun.
now remember, if you do that, you have no way or stocking the mag tube or end cap from coming off, you well need whats called a wave washer. which is what they uses on the 1100, 1187 to keep the mag tube on, or use a 2 pc clamp
we have all of this and can also do the dimple job for you if needed, Gunsmithing charge depends of if you are buyign the parts from us or providing them

Large socket that fits in the tube against the inside of the dimple. Hammer and drift against the outside. Like doing bodywork on a car.

yes that can works, but many have made there tube out of round o have has the socket stock the other side of the dimples and cant get it out.

Thanks guys, good food for thought.

I'm on the fence, I watched a couple YouTube videos and Brownels dimple remover looks pretty easy to replicate. I have the necessary tools and skill to make something similar. On the other side I have been permanently modifying my guns less and less, I prefer bolt on or no smith options when I can. This one might just stay at stock capacity, as it will be a hunting gun primarily and I'll have to plug it when shooting shot anyway. My Fabarm is 7+1 and keeps me plenty happy, will mull it over for a bit I think.

I just stuff a rag in the chamber/action and then grind them down with a dremel until the follower passes by them smoothly.

If you go the socket route, make sure you grease it up. Someone here got one stuck and bent the crap out of the mag tube so bad he had to replace it. Drilling and filing takes less time than making a swager.

I used a socket that just fit inside the mag tube and used a 6” x 1/2” drive extension to hold onto the socket to “Swedge” out the dimples. I did not lube the socket which might not have been a bad idea. I stuck it in just enough to cover the dimples (going too far will result in a socket stuck on the other side of the dimples) Then with a 3/8” brass punch, hammer the dimple on the outside towards the socket. (The brass punch won’t mar the parkerized finish)

A few hits on each dimple will loosen up the socket from being pinched. It worked perfect for me. Buttery smooth. Just find the right socket and once it loosens up inside see if you can step the socket up so you don’t go out of round in the tube. The first socket I used was metric I think and after I swedged it a few times I changed to a standard of roughly the same size and finished Swedging them out. I’ve done several this way and never had a issue. It is just my opinion but I much prefer this way over drilling them out and dealing with holes and burrs.

Depending on desired barrel length (the longer the harder) I drilled out the ring and installed police Detent and spring. I bought the staking tool then added police mag cap. No issues so far
