870 magazine tube issue

So I purchased 2 different 870 models about 3 months ago, and have taken them out clay shooting twice... both times going through 250 shells. This last time I noticed something that would occasionally occur, and I am not sure why.

while cycling the pump, occasionally it would not pull the next shell into the action for loading. (I will take pictures when I get home to explain).

Basically I have a 4 round tube mag, and one chambered... I fire off 2 or 3, and the next one doesn't come out of the tube. then I cycle the pump 2 or 3 times (as if its empty), then the next shell pops right out and operates as normal. happened 2 or 3 times with BOTH shotguns.

If it makes a difference, one is a Remington Express, and one is a DA Grizzly. Both firearms were detail stripped and cleaned out of the box, but not other alterations have been made. Both worked flawlessly for about 400 rounds then started having the odd hiccup.

Any thoughts would help
 
What ammo are you using? It's pretty strange that the problem would arise out of the blue, after functioning perfectly for 500rds first.

Could be that you are short-shucking the action. I hope it's this, because it's the easiest fix. Test by loading and cycling the action while REALLY HAMMERING on the pump for at least 50 rounds or so. You're not going to break it this way, so you might as well completely eliminate this as a possible source of the problem.

Could also be that both shotguns have timing issues arising from the shell latches. Either the action bars or shell latches themselves are incorrectly dimensioned, or there is some interference (from fouling or a burr) causing them not to function properly. If it's more than fouling, then it's probably a warranty issue. You can DIY fix it, but it's not super easy.
 
If I recall, they were federal target loads. It would make sense that it is an ammunition problem as it happened to both shotguns almost simultaneously... the only reason I don't declare 100% is that I was shooting the same ammunition both outings, and it worked flawlessly up until then
 
I hope it's as simple as an ammunition problem. You'll have to do some side-by-side testing to confirm that possibility.

If the problem is repeatable just while cycling shells, I'd say that you should get them warrantied.
