hey everyone,

looking to pick up a police model 870 or a marine magnum, what the difference between them other than the finish? any recommendations for a good home defense 12 gauge?

i hear the police model has a different receiver then the marine magnum?? this true?

I don't know the difference between the 2, but I know you could save yourself some money, and get a Mossberg. The U.S. Coast Guard use them so they should be fairly decent.

if he wants to save money, he could always go with the 870 HD express and not have to use a liquor store hold-up gun (mossberg).

I The Express is Remington's "budget" gun, made to compete with the cheaper to make Winchester and Mossberg guns.

The Wingmaster is Remington’s "Cadillac" top-of-the-line sporting gun.

The Police is a Wingmaster with a dull finish and is a much more carefully inspected and built gun.

The new "Tactical" and Marine Magnum guns are based on the Express.

How Remington lowered the Express price was to reduce hand labor to a bare minimum, and to eliminate much of the polishing and de-burring the better quality Wingmaster and Police guns get.

The Express is basically the same forged and milled steel receiver and heavy-duty internals gun the better 870's are, just in a rougher, less well finished form with plastic and MIM parts.

The Express Model has:
A plastic trigger group.
The dimples in the mag tube and the new style plastic magazine retention system, EXCEPT on the extended magazine versions, which do NOT have the dimples.
A rougher finish inside and outside, with machine marks and some burrs left.
A rougher, bead blasted blue job.
A less polished bore.
A two piece sleeved barrel. (not 100% sure about this)
Hardwood or synthetic stock, with a sporting-length fore end and pressed-in checkering.

The Defense version has 18", Cylinder bore barrel, with a bead sight.

The Marine Magnum and Tactical models have plated or polymer finishes.
Some Metal Injection Molded (MIM) parts, like the extractor.

The Wingmaster has:
An aluminum trigger group.
The old style magazine retention system.
A much smoother finish inside and out, no machine marks or burrs.
The Wingmaster gun receives a higher level of inspection and finishing.
A fine, commercial polished blue finish.
A polished bore.
A chrome plated bolt.
A one piece barrel.
Walnut stocks with the famous "Bowling Pin" finish in gloss or satin. and better checkering.
Wide choices in barrel lengths and choke options.
No use of MIM parts, the extractor is milled.

The Wingmaster is the full top-of-the-line commercial Remington pump gun, and is priced accordingly.

The 870 Police has:
An aluminum trigger group.
The old style magazine retention system.
A much smoother finish inside and out, no machine marks or burrs.
The Police gun receives a higher level of inspection and finishing and is built in a special area of the plant from 100% inspected parts.
A military-grade parkerized finish.
A polished bore.
A one piece barrel.
Walnut or synthetic stock, with a short police-length fore end.
The Remington “R3” super recoil pad that reduces felt recoil by 30%.
Choices in different stocks, including Speed-feed, and others.
18" to 20" improved cylinder barrel, with a wide choice in sights, including rifle, ghost ring, and luminous.
Police options like magazine extenders, forearms with built-in lights, and sling swivels.
Heavy-duty magazine spring.
Heavy-duty trigger-sear spring.
Heavy-duty shell lifter spring.
Sling swivel mounts.
No use of MIM parts, the extractor is milled.

The Express is a "bottom of the line" budget gun, the Wingmaster is a "top of the line" sporting gun, the Police is the top-of-the-line in defense guns. have posted this before but here is the difference between the Marine and the police.

Nicely done Tom.
I love my 870 express, and it was my first gun too Bobby. I've never shot a Wingmaster before, but I'm sure it'd be a treat.

What did you end up buying Bobby?

Marine Magnum = blinged up Express that costs as much as a far superior 870P.

if you live in coastal areas and actually need the corrosion resistance of a marine mag, then go for it.
but dont be one of the guys that buy them because 'ooh, its a cool shiny silver shotgun'

I just bought my self an 870 express with the extended mag tube as my first shot gun. And I'm in love with it, for me the more expensive models just offers bling and I'd much rather custom it my own way. I ended up putting the knoxx recoil stock with pistol grip on it and got rid of the plastic furnature. Made a big difference.

Besides if you do ever have to shoot some one with it, your probably going to need to throw it in a lake any ways so save your self a few bucks ;)

I have an 870 express tactical. Outwardly, it looks good, its not too heavy etc. but the finish is lousy and i am not overly impressed with it quality wise. For 500 bucks it was an OK deal, got what i paid for.

I will likely have it refinished someday anyhow and pickup an 870 police in the near future.

Comparing it side by side to a 590A1 is no contest whatsoever, the mossy is a far superior shotgun but it cost nearly 70% more and is not really a competing product to the 870 express line at all.

Good run-down on the different models.

Would one be able to deburr and polish an express to work smoothly or will this just take a few boxes of shells through it?

I would be willing to put in the time to detail the inner workings of the Express, lets me get to know the gun better too!!

This is if I can't find an 870P.....

Bill

Hard to beat a Wingmaster. I have rebuild several of them and have always been more than satisfied with the end result. I found an old 870P a couple of years ago and it is a gem.
