Okay a couple weeks ago I bought a brand new 870 from the local sports shop. I've never owned a brand new gun until now so I'm not sure if this is normal. Sometimes after I fire a round the pump seems like it almost gets stuck in the loaded position. It comes back and ejects the shotshell but sometimes it takes an excessive amount of force (putting the gun against my knee and pulling at the pump with both hands). I'm wondering if this is common with a new shotgun and it just has to go through a couple hundred rounds or if I should be taking it back to the dealer. What do you guys figure?

Let me guess, you're using cheap WalMart/CTC shells.

If so, stop it, they are garbage. Shell out for decent shells.

Same thing happened to my buddy last summer and RePete is correct, the ammo was to blame. Try some better quality rounds and if that doesn't help, take it back.

As has been suggested, try some quality ammo first, then if the problem persists, take it back. A simple polish of the chamber might fix it, but that should not be at your cost. Regards, Eagleye.

I had a feeling it may have been the ammo. Yes it was just the cheap stuff as that seems like the only cost effective way to go through so many rounds without getting into reloading.

I've fired a bunch of cheapo Walmart and CT shells through my Ithacas and they cycle like butter. Something ain't right. You shouldn't have to spend $5 a shell (may be exaggerating a bit ;)) to get a gun to work properly.

I had the same problem..... cheap walmart ammo was to blame. but out of two hundred shells it only did it three times. but only with cheap winchester target loads

I'm running cheap shells in my HP9-1 870 action, and they aren't sticking at all...

Take it back and see what he recommends.

was having the shells stick in my dads express supper mag so far it's only been with federal trap loads the whinchester AA is much nicer

Reloading 12ga isn't cheap today.

Buying a flat of shells is cheaper, after you have tried a box first.

High brass wall cheap shells works fine, I find the shorter ones is the ones that give me problems...Then again I run a semi.....

Yes Peter I run cheap ammo through that Rem 1100.

Those Winchester target loads CTC and Walmart sells are problematic. At least around here, a flat 10 boxes of Remington Gun Club or Federal Target actually work out to be cheaper than the 4 box packs.

They won't jam your gun and they burn A LOT cleaner. I had to use that Winchester when it was all my local store had in stock and it is DIRTY.

Try some 320 or 400 grit sand paper in the chamber and give it a good rubbing....could be it's a bit rough and that might remove some burrs or whatever. I have a friend who did this and it made a difference when extracting fired hulls.
