Hey guys, there are maybe 2 shotguns that make me green with envy whenever I see them..one of them has to be this version of the 870 police;

870police.jpg

(borrowed image from one listed in the EE~hope that's OK) I've recently joined the ranks of the 12.5" Grizzly owners :) but still...when I see one of these, I wish I had enough $ laying around to pounce on it. Especially that specimen~the thing looks new! Anyhow, I've seen nice wood furniture put on 12.5" Grizzlies and am wondering whether owners buy this new, where they buy it...if this nice "police" style is available..etc.

Thanks for taking a moment to respond.

Rob

Only the furniture appears to be from an 870 Police Magnum. The rest of it is a Wingmaster with a 2-3/4" receiver and chamber.

Police shotguns have 3" chambers and receivers and marked as Remington 870 Police Magnum and have an enhanced shell lifter.

Not sure about the barrel either, I don't see a bead, or a ramp under it.

In comparison to the length of the factory extension, the barrel appears to be less than 18" too. As well, a factory 18" barrel falls a bit longer than the bayonet step at the end of the extension when in stalled.

Did you know that the cutout in the butt end of the folder is there so that when the stock is folded over a target rear sight barrel, the sight won't interfere with the folder?

This is my gun that is for sale.
Sorry Easy but youre wrong on this one, you don't see the bead but it's there, this is not a cut down barrel, it is factory Remington from one end to the other, i bought the gun new in the box myself in the 80s and it was marked ''870 Police model'' on the box and it came with an exact 18'' barrel (not 18 1\2'') and 2 3\4'' chamber (Police gun were not chambered 3'' at that time and the receiver were not marked ''Police'' yet.

Bead sight barrel had no ramp in the 70s and 80s.

The gun is genuine and not modified in any way, that is the way it came from the Remington factory, even the swivels are factory Remington from the 80s era.

The folding stock is brand new, even the tiny rubber butt pad is still there.

Yeah, as far as barrel length, photos can be very deceiving/misleading. I also didn't realize how canted the shotgun in your photo is to hide the bead sight.

What are the two capital letters located on the left side of the barrel near the chamber and what is the first letter of the serial number on the receiver?

I know that using barrel codes to date a shotgun is unreliable, but it will at least tell me when the barrel was made.

I'm hoping to learn something new to add to my Remington knowledge library as I recall that the first 3" magnums were made around 1955.

I will post more information tonight.

I will also post a better picture of the end of the barrel and the sight.

Even if they made 3" magnums receiver in the 50s, they only started making police model with 3" chamber until the late 80s early 90s, before that they were all 2 3\4" .

.

I now believe you have an old 2-3/4" Police Model shotgun (just not a magnum) that was in fact built on early Wingmaster receivers. They came with REM TopFolders and 18" CYL bore barrels and you were correct about the bead without the ramp.

I had to consult my Remington library. Hard to keep everything memorized between these old y(ears).

This one is from 1979. It's all original 'cept the TacStar extension.

McCoy ... I see you sold your Ithaca 87. I think this one is going to go soon too. :D Extra publicity doesn't hurt.

easy did make soem good point, there is a bunch of guns like this that are faked up.
If it were not for the OP having the box and being the only owner it may have been sold to someone like myself or easy for a low low price :)

My gun was bought new in the box in 1981.
Mine is the catalog number #5032 (Remington Law Enforcement Products catalog of 1981) came with the regular lacquer finished wooden stock, bought the steel Remington folding stock and mag extension with it as accessories.

Letters are : LB
Serial number is V633### V
Barrel is marked CYL
