Hi all,

I find the trigger on my 870 Police to be way too heavy. I understand that this is done for liability reasons, but I use mine for hunting, and it's just too damn heavy.

I have heard that all that needs to be replaced is a single spring, probably a regular 870 Wingmaster spring. I also heard I cut just cut a coil or two off the existing spring but want to avoid modifying the original components.

So, my question is, is it simply a spring swap that I need to do?

Also, I bought this gun "as new" off here a while back, and discovered there is no magazine spring retainer. Does the Police model not have a spring retainer for some reason? I certainly need one...

Not sure about the trigger springs, but I can help with the second question.

Spring retainers are available at any gunshop that is a Remington dealer.
I paid about $5 for mine for my older Wingmaster. Some claim you don't
need one--you probably don't, but the spring will come flying out each time you
remove the cap.

www.reliablegun.com in Vancouver can set you up if your local shop doesn't have them. Ask for Shane.

Replacing the trigger spring is a very easy swap. Remove the trigger group by knocking out the two cross pins and the spring is right there on the trigger assembly. You can't miss it. Pluck it out and replace it with a lighter weight spring.

The challenge might be getting a standard weight spring. Due to the American laws on shotgun parts they can be hard to come by. Try Western Gun Parts first. They should have the magazine retainer as well. They are pretty common parts.
