Hi there:

I just picked up an 870 Express Magnum synthetic finish. This is my first pump gun, always had break actions and autos Rem 1100.

Anyway when the action is to the rear on this gun and I turn the gun upside down (barrell facing the ground) or reverse it and have the barrell facing the sky, I hear something sliding and eventually coming to a stop.

Is this normal? And if it is what is it that is sliding around?

Could it be the plug- the green plastic rod that limits the mag to two rounds? If so it's normal.

You could be hearing the bolt. Normal.

I think RePete is correct, as that's the general direction the noise is coming from, it doesn't sound like anything is broken just like something sliding into place.

Thanks guys

On mines it's the bolt, it slides back and forth a little till the chambers closed. Its pretty much impossible to be the plug as it doesnt move and sits ontop of the spring. slide the action open half way and watch you can slide the bolt on the carrier a little.

I've seen wooden plugs that were just a basic piece of dowel slid into the mag tube inside the speing, but not supported by it.....guess it depends on whether this is the case or not...

your all wrong.........I have three 870's and I hear this on all of them (Bolt my ass). The noise is coming from the stock. To fix this, remove the butt plate/stock and take out the loose piece of plastic trapped in the screw channel.

What loose peice of plastic? Mine it's the bolt I can watch it move and hear the noise at the same time. I've taken the butt stock of and theres a steel spacer but I don't see loose plastic?

When I take the bolt and forearm off there no more noise.

I'll take a look back there and see if/what I can find in the screw channel

My money is on a wooden dowl plug. The bolt doesn't move enough to make a sliding sound when the action is open. It will move a bit on the action bars but it doesn't "slide" around.

Stuff two shells in the mag. DO NOT chamber a round. If the sound stops it is the plug. The manual will show how to properly intsall the plug in the mag spring so it doesn't move.

P.S. 870 bolts do rattle without being locked in battery or fully opened.

cheers Darryl

Tried stuffing a couple of shells up the mag tube. Rattle is still there and is coming from the butt area. So it's either the bolt or something in the screw holes that attached to the recoil pad on the stock.

Still need to check in there need to find a screw driver small enough and strong enough (so it doesn't break or destroy the screw head) to take a look in there.

A medium round shaft Philips screwdriver will remove the pad screws and pad. Use oil on the screwdriver shaft to prevent tearing the recoil pad. A long shank slot screw driver will remove the stock bolt. Maybe there is a treasure left in there from a previous owner......

cheers Darryl

Yes, close -
It is the washer thing that has come loose and is now sliding freely along the long bolt which holds the stock to the receiver (I had the same thing happen on mine - remove stock and bolt then toss the tiny washer-thing.)

i had the same prob with mine. it turned out to be a washer sliding back and forth on the bolt that attaches the rear stock to the reciever. take it appart and check it out.

When I remove the stock bolt is that going to require me to do anything to the action/bolt/trigger group afterward?

I've never taken a shotgun down that far.
