HEY FELLAS, looking to fired slugs through my 870 express mag, anyone out there have experience with this, it won't be my main hunting gun but just incase a nice bear comes along while duck hunting. thanks

Get some 3" Federal magnum slugs (Foster style) and you will be fine. Little bit of recoil, but hey - who doesn't like recoil?

I fire 2 3/4 1oz slugs thew my 870 marine magnum. recoil isnt to bad.
if your wondering if its safe, yes it is. get your self some cheap rifled slugs to get used to aiming them and the recoil.

does it matter what screw in choke i have when i shoot?????

you will usually find best results with an IC choke or even a modified, with foster slugs though I have shot them out of full choke barrels with damage to th the gun. do not shoot the foster type slugs out of a full choke..... most are made of solid copper and will bulge the barrel.

so have fun with the foster slugs....

I find the recoil on 3" magnum slugs to be manageable with my stock 870 Express 18"
It kicks you back but some people make it sound like your arm is gonna fly over to Alaska.

I've shot enough rifled slugs through an 870 to tell you that it's not a problem. They are suprisingly accurate as well. I'd definitley reccomend the 3" as opposed to the 2 3/4" if you are planning on using it for bear self defense. More power = more dead. Either way, it'll get the job done. The kick isn't that bad either, just lean into it a little. I've had to destroy two black bears with slugs in the 870 and it wasn't bang/flop, but it was as close as it gets with a bear.
