I've been looking online about shimming or modifying an 870 stock to make it fit me better and in pictures online I have seen a thin steel plate that gets mounted between the receiver and stock. Apparently the wood stock guns come with this from the factory, but the used wood stock I bought didn't come with one.

Is it necessary to have this plate between the stock and receiver? What's it's purpose?

I'm not having much luck with finding shims, any leads? The gun aims high when I mount it.

That spacer was there to prevent damage to the wooden stock from over tightening
There are no such items or kits that I have seen as far as stock shims for a 870 to do what you want
Cheers

Thanks guys. I was searching online and found many pics of this plate, just no explanation of it's purpose. It's been a long time since I had a wood stock on my 870 and the missing plate might explain why the stock doesn't seem to be fitting to the receiver properly.

Will this plate effect the fit of the stock at all and correct how it's pointed high when I mount the gun? From what I remember, the original wood stock fit me perfectly.

Yes for sure it could pending hole the hole is drilled. The spacer put it in line also

I just swapped out a sets on an 870 and a grizzly, I don't remember the shim acting in any way to adjust the fit. It just takes up space between the reciever and butt stock so when you tighten the stock it doesn't get crushed at the shoulder that contacts the socket of the reciever. I might have a spare one off of a grizzly if you can't find one anywhere, you can just have it. I compared it to the Remington one that came with the stock and they are the same dimensions. PM me if you want it.
