I am building this 870 deer gun based on a brand new Wingmaster and that I bought recently (2023 Production).

The gun is identical to this one … but instead of ghost ring sights it has rifle sights ... and which are a bit more precise.

The trigger of that Wingmaster was pretty sluggish from the factory and I installed a Timney trigger fix.

The Timney trigger fix helped, ... however there is still a bit of creep in the trigger ….. and which I don’t like … :-(

Now, I have a whole bunch of extra 870 sears laying around here and I have an extra 870 trigger group to “play” with. I am thinking about ordering one or two additional 870 hammers … and giving it a try at polishing a sear and hammer … and to try to get a nice crisp trigger.

I have never done this ... and I don’t want to ruin that gun. So I would be trying this with extra sears and hammers … And if it works, I would just switch out the hammer and sear in that gun.

Has anybody a link to a good tutorial of how to adjust/polish an 870 trigger? Or even a basic tutorial for other triggers that are similar to an 870 …?

Any advise ... ?

I used to grind the sear engagement to about half of factory original and then hit the surfaces lightly on a soft slow 400 grit wheel and lighten the return spring... no creep but a slight amount of take up due the the pump action.. Most of the time about 2 pounds... never screwed one up other than occasionally I had to increase the spring weight as I took too much out...

Ok, for those who are interested ... here is what I did ….

1.) I polished the sear engagement and the hammer with a small triangular translucent Arkansas file. With a light touch … and only a couple of strokes for the hammer and the sear … just enough to polish those surfaces.

2.) And I installed the lightest spring that came with the Timney kit (the blue spring).

The trigger now breaks pretty clean …. like my other 870.

:dancingbanana:

I am happy!!!

There is a slight amount of take up and then comes a wall … and then the trigger breaks.

No more creep!

This was easier than I had thought ....

Now I need to shoot different brand of slugs through some different chokes ... and see what the gun can do .....
