I am thinking of replacing my Mossberg 500 ATP with something new.
I have it narrowed down to a Mossberg MODEL 590 SPECIAL PURPOSE , or one of the Remmy 870's.
I already have a hunting gun, so this will be just for our local 2 and 3 gun matches.
The Mossberg seems like the way too go so far.
Is there anything I should know about them? I am sure quality is on par with everything Mossberg makes, but does this particular model have any "quirks" a guy should know about before ordering?

My hunting shotgun is the Rem 870 Express; I have had it for 17 years, put many rounds throug it and have not had any problems with it. If I were ever to lose it (I would never seel it), I would get another in a heartbeat.

I bought a 590 about a year ago to take to the pistol range as a toy to throw slugs. It works very well, the only problem i had was that I did not get all the oil out of the mag tube so the follower would jam. I put a Wilson mag follower in it, and got it cleaned really well, and have not had an issue with it since. I can cover a 5 shott group of slugs with the end of a pop can at 25 metres if I am doing my part.

If I had not come across the deal on the 590, I may have built something similar around an 870. Either one would work fine. I personally like loading the Mossberg better than the 870 since the loading gate (I thinkthat is waht you call it) swings up out of the way when the action is closed.
