Hey everyone,
I'm having trouble finding a recoil pad that is flush with the contours of the 870 Walnut Field Grade 'police stock'. The ones I've used are the Remington Supercell Pad for wood stock and the Hogue Pre-Sized Recoil Pad.

My question is are the dimensions of a walnut stock slightly different or are newer recoil pads designed to fit so many models that they arent a perfect fit for one?

It's often taken me more than a day to answer some of my own questions too :)

The "pre-fit" pads are often disappointing. The only way to get a proper installation is
"grind to fit ". A file is the slow boat to China. Most prefer either a fixed mount grinding disc or belt sander ( a drill or dremel etc. just isn't satifactory) then finish file to flush. Make sure of your Length of Pull and Pitch, then start with the stock cut ... flush & flat. Proceed slowly ... ( it's a $ 50 +/- chunk of rubber you're grinding away to dust ! ) ... watch the profile carefully when removing material, and carry the lines of the stock through, especially at the toe. Take a wrap or two of masking tape around the stock to prevent inadvertant gouging ! Halfway through the tape, you're getting pretty close to the wood !
