870 Wingmaster jamming?

I went trap shooting on Saturday with my new 870 Wingmaster Classic Trap. I used cheap Winchester ammo from Lebaron. Most of the time it was functioning flawlessly, but on occasion I would have difficulty moving the slide back to extract spent cartridge. One time it actually jammed completely and I had to take the shotgun apart to clear the shell. I tried to cycle it with the round in , but without shooting and it worked without any problems many times. I have read on the internet that someone had the same problem and he was advised by other people that it was due to cheap shells not having enough brass in them and they expanded too much, which caused difficulty with extraction. Do you guys think that this is a legitimate explanation and I should try to use better ammo, or could there be another reason for this malfunction?

Was it Winchester "Universals"? They call them Universals because they work universally bad in all guns.

I found the same issue using Winchester Trap and Field shells. I believe it is the actual plastic causing the hard extraction. I switched to Federal trap loads. Their plastic has fine lines all around. Never had an extraction issue (or misfire) since. On another note: If money for shells isn't an issue, Winchester AA shotshells are of a higher quality, but can cost $85.00 or more per case compared to the $65.00 a case for the Federals.

Thanks for your input guys,
I will definitely try a different ammo. Funny enough my friend was using the same ammo in his Stoeger semi-auto with no problems at all.

Couldn't have been with a Wingmaster! It must have been an Express, since they are known for their problems. :D

Sorry, I couldn't stop myself there.

Yes, try different ammo. I've had a couple of shells be difficult to extract.

They can't be that bad. Me and a friend of mine have run through god knows how many rounds of it in everything from my $40 Savage to his brand new Mossberg 500.

Never had a problem yet, and until I do, I'm going to keep buying them.

Why would you do that? When you can buy flats of Federal Top guns, Winchester Super Targets or Remington Gun Clubs, cheaper. And support your local dealer instead of walmart.

I think it is a sad time we are living in when name companies like Remington and Winchester are both allowing such poor quality. Customers who buy cheaper and push manufacturers to provide cheaper leave manufacturers with no alternative but to save by providing less quality control. Remington has done OK by shorting quality control on the express and now they are saving a bit with the wingmaster. Winchester is prostituting themselves to the big box stores. Both are singing how low can you go! Products that do not work should be returned where they were bought and demand a full refund.

my 870 does this also, works flawlessly with anything other than Winchester trap and skeet. We've tried everything short of machining to make them work right, they just wont go.

I think if I can shoot normally with other ammunition, I am not going to bother with polishing anything. Changing ammo seems like the simplest solution to me.
