I have been a Wingmaster owner for more than 40 years, but am doing some on-line "looking" for another family member, and am wondering if any folks who own, or have handled an 870 Sportsman can pass along their impressions. They seem "value priced" compared to the Wingmaster.

Wood, ad metal finish were two differences and I think some of the parts were plastic on the Sportsman.

Compared to today's Wingmaster no big difference. Compared to a '60's Wingmaster all the difference in the world. This is my opinion and I stand by it. BUT it is a good gun that will do what it is supposed to do.

I would agree with madtrapper143 but have had 2 sportsman ,first one was complete junk broken parts jamming could not take the pounding so I traded it for some magic beans.needed a back up so bought a 3.5" camo sportsmen and it has "done its job" actually pretty well although it does not see the amount of shells that the first one did .

I would take REDDOG's opinion of the Sportsman over mine. He has actually owned one and I have not. There was a time that remington/870/sportsman and the words "broken parts" were never heard in the same statement. Shame.

The best thing about the sportsman's series and the express series is they give people lots to talk about on these threads other than that they are grudge and inferior.

I have an old one, probably from the 80's. It seems to be good quality, metal trigger housing, gloss bluing, etc. Not sure what the difference is from a Wingmaster, other than the wood appears to cheaper, it's not walnut. It says "Sportsman 12 Pump" on the receiver.
I always thought it was the "Express" model before they came out with that one. I wasn't aware they still make a Sportsman.
